It is a problem that only cropping can solve in documentary situations. In movie lighting, one can put up Neutral Density and colour correction filters on visible windows, and of course use HDO or Tungsten lighting however one wants. Time and budget!
There are often flare problems due to light entering the periphery of the lens and bouncing about in the glass. The solution to this is to use a 'flag' or lens hood that blocks the light source without itself appearing in the picture. I often use the edge of my hand as a flag, but anything will do. You can't be me, I'm taken
