Mr Lewis quit amid claims of financial irregularities and inappropriate behaviour, which he denies. Communities Secretary Hazel Blears said the affair had left Conservative leader David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson "embroiled in a mess". A fellow deputy mayor said Labour's reaction was "ungracious" as Mr Lewis had worked hard to help young people. Mr Lewis's resignation follows that last month of Mr Johnson's Deputy Chief of Staff James McGrath.

It took the party by surprise in the crucial first weekend of campaigning: the first they knew of his hesitation was when he failed to turn up at a selection meeting late on Friday evening. The meeting was eventually called off and the selection vote postponed until tomorrow.
