In the U.S., considerable constraint on expression is applied by employers. Since one depends on one's employer not only for a weekly paycheck but also for health insurance, it is not advisable to make public statements that are not acceptable.

For example, in Colorado Springs it is perfectly acceptable to have a Christian icon on one's desk and perhaps a framed picture of The Savior on the office wall, but to state that one is a Pastafarian is likely to result in immediate social isolation at least.
