AT, I know you'll love this:

"But now suddenly, John McCain says he is about change, too. He even started using some of my lines. Suddenly he says he wants 'to turn the page.' He had an ad today that he started running that he and Gov. Palin would bring the change that we need. He had this in an advertisement. Sound familiar? Let me tell you something, instead of borrowing my lines he needs to borrow our ideas," Obama said.

He followed up with a dig on lobbyists, saying "if you think those lobbyists are working day and night for John McCain just to put themselves out of business, well then I've got a bridge to sell you up in Alaska."

Never heard of it bevor:

Manila Bulletin Online

In an effort to promote and encourage democracy and the development and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, the United Nations General Assembly agreed to observe an annual International Day of Democracy on September 15, beginning in 2008.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the first International Conference of New or Restored Democracies.

In the last one hundred years, many events of significance have transpired. European empires that dominated the nineteenth century concluded their reigns and we witnessed two world wars. We saw the rise and fall of Fascism and Nazism, transformation in China, the rise and end of Communism and its fall in some parts of Europe and the world, and a shift from the economic supremacy of the West to a new economic calculation which is more controlled by Japan and Southeast Asia. These events would all lead to the beginning of the rise of democracy.

Democracy has evolved over time and from the Greeks in the ancient world to the Magna Carta in England in 1215, to other time in world history. By the twentieth century, the idea of democracy had gained a reputation as the standard form of government.

Europeans should be so happy about their weather.  You guys don't get the crazy weather that we get here.

Remnants from Hurricane Ike met a cold front, and have smashed the little town I'm in to bits.  And I'm in Ohio....

We had sustained tropical storm force winds yesterday with gusts nearing hurricane strength. Well over 100 kph (72 mph to be exact)

We're still without power, I'm in my campus building where they've got a diesel generator keeping the lights on.

The winds stripped trees of their leaves, and took a ton of branches down.  They're saying maybe a week to get power up in town, and classes have been cancelled.

After the storm died down last night, I went out for a walk, and it was surreal.  No lights, so I head into town on foot, and on High Street the only place open was the Catholic church.  There must have been 2,000 candles burning in that place.  People sitting in pews, and the priest was wearing this black cassock, like something out of a horror movie.

I hear that Chicago got nailed pretty hard to.  Like 15-20 inches of rain. Anyone hear from Poemless?

In fact, low hurricane level winds are far more common from extratropical storms in NYC than from actual hurricanes, of which we've gotten a grand total of one in the past one hundred fifty years. Official: Tunnel services to be hit for months - News & Advice, Travel - The Independent

Full Channel Tunnel services will take several months to resume following last week's fire, it was revealed today.

Tunnel organiser Eurotunnel was running around a third of normal services on the 50km Folkestone to Calais link today.

This severely-restricted service will continue until Thursday when Eurotunnel will announce new schedules.

But a Eurotunnel spokesman said: "It will take several months before everything is back to normal.

"This was a serious fire that went on for 16-17 hours and the necessary repairs will take a lot of time."

All forms of tunnel traffic - passenger and freight shuttles, through-freights trains and London to Paris and Brussels high-speed Eurostar trains - were operating today.

IG thrown $20bn lifeline

US authorities were on Monday fighting a fresh fire in the crisis on Wall Street, throwing a $20bn lifeline to AIG, one of the world's largest insurers, just hours after the collapse of Lehman Brothers and Bank of America's $50bn rescue takeover of Merrill Lynch.

The deal between AIG and New York State insurance regulators allows the company to access $20bn of its own capital in a desperate attempt to stave off a liquidity crisis and credit downgrades.

So where should I pick up a 3rd bank account? HSBC? I have accounts at BoA (too big to fail?) and etrade (almost failed last fall, subsequently bailed out by a hedge fund, still worried about it). I really do not want to be on the road when my banks disappear.

My take is that you're fine so long as you're with banks that are most certainly "too big to fail".  BoA is a good choice, or at least I think (hope?) it is, since I have my money there.

HSBC is probably a good one, too.  Largest UK bank, if I'm not mistaken.  Probably not going to fail.

That said, my experience with them was incredibly frustrating.  They were very bureaucratic and generally just dumber than catshit.  I eventually wound up just using my BoA card with my American account.

The only issue I could possibly see is that I think HSBC largely does the online account thing.  Not a lot of branches in the states, or at least there weren't last I looked.  I don't personally like the idea of not being able to head down the road to the branch and get hold of my money.  (He who gets there first avoids the FDIC headache, after all.)  But I'm paranoid that way, having grown up in a household suffering a two-generations-long Depression Mentality.

And maybe they do have branches near you, which would make it an entirely different story.

Right, and I don't know the answer.

I really like etrade - their online banking is the best in the business, which I will need while on the road for a year, and the security is awesome as well as it uses a security token. So in order to steal from my account, you need my username, password, and physical possession of the security token. Nice for when you stop by that internet cafe in India...

Well I've just got a "We dont believe you have moved bring us something to prove you have a new address" letter in response to my "I've moved house letter"

Guess which address it got sent to. yes, the new one which they dont believe I've moved to.

and guess how many letters there are at my old address saying "Someones just tried to move your bank account" and yes that would be zero.

I'd believe banks are legally supposed to have a "proof of adress" of their account owners. It would be dumb to ask for it at your old adress as they know you've moved...

Well if their letter had said that, rather than something along the liners of "We don't believe you've moved that would be fine.

Which one will actually get a reply by your average lazy customer ?

Well I would have thought you'd send one out saying "We won't allow you to take any money out till you've shown us proof of address" rather than the two that give an option.  the sudden lack of money access would concentrate the mind.

Depending on where you plan to go, a HSBC account can be useful because they do have a lot of branches in a lot of countries... worth investigating just from that angle perhaps.

I used to have various Citibank accounts all over Europe for that reason. You could go to an ATM bank in Germany, France, or Belgium, and pay bills or give other transfer instructions to your branch in any of these countries. It didn't work at Citibank ATMs in the U.S., though. I dropped all except the German one after they started raising the fees (and the French one was gracious enough to waive the usual fee for closing the account after they failed to close it on the first attempt....)

I heard that because Hong Kong doesn't have a lender of last resort, HSBC suffers from less moral hazard and is better capitalised (lower leverage) than most Western™ banks.

WaMu has been downgraded to junk.

AIG's been downgraded by two of the agencies.

The 'Strangest Presidential Election of All Time™' keeps on rolling.

A respected GOP former Virginia governor, Linwood Holton, has endorsed and will campaign for Obama.  This is a huge, huge, break for Obama.  It doesn't guarantee him the state but comes pretty damn close.

Melanchthon is not human?  He never told me that.

It can. The definition of 'old' is loose so I leave it open to interpretation...
