The Secretary of State of the Vatican declared this afternoon that in order to be readmitted into his full episcopal functions Williamson must make absolute, unequivocal and public ammend for his opinions on the Holocaust. Th Vatican declaration described Williamson's opinions as "absolutely unacceptable and firmly refused" by Benedict XVI.

The Vatican further noted that Benedict XVI was not aware of Williamson's opinions before he revoked the excommunication.

Apparently, Merkel and the German Catholic Church do carry some weight.

(Whether he makes public contrition or not, it would be interesting to see Williamson set foot in Germany or Austria.)
