John Bolton and John Yoo have, to use Hunter's phrase, gone beyond the "event horizon" of satire with an NYT op-ed on the potential for the incoming President to over-reach his powers

Now hunter can be a funny guy, but even he recognises that this sort of thing goes so far beyond the bounds that it can't be touched. It's a real "Excuse me..!! {long pause of silent shock}" moment

Some things defy all attempts at satire. It is not that it is difficult to satirize them, but that they are immune. Like black holes, they pull all humor near them to a certain event horizon and then beyond, where it is torn to shreds, never to be seen again.

I share his stupefaction. They said that satire was dead when kissinger got the Nobel prize for peace, but this is something that, if not defying reality to the same extent, is at least an event of similar type. How the NYT presses could print such..such... this and not spontaneously combust like a computer in a 60s spy thriller asked "why?", I simply cannot fathom.

Yes, architects of legal arguments on torture are fine, and Obama appointing a bunch of DFHs to Justice is not cool.  Makes sense to me.

Your liberal media.

In other US news: DiFi Head Asplode, Ron Wyden was consulted on the Panetta pick and she wasn't.

An omission which is getting big approval ratings around the blogos.

I still have big reservations about anything useful coming out of DC whilst filth like DiFi are still supposedly among the good guys.

I think it's pretty clear, given who knew and who didn't know, that DiFi is not seen as one of the good guys.  DiFi wants someone who is as tainted as she is by the illegal programs.  This talk about wanting a professional spook at CIA is horseshit, especially considering the people she's voted to confirm.

Now read this.  Our friends at the ACLU have been busy.  And then Greenwald's post on the OLC appointment.

Shame she's the Intelligence Committee Chair then.

I seriously doubt the ALCU thing will come to anything. I simply no longer believe there is any will in DC to hold the Bushies accountable for what they have done. There was too much cross-party collusion, complicity and yes... agreement.

An awful lot of Beltway Democrats have demonstrated time and again that they believe, in their heart of hearts, that what the Bushes did was not just legal, but justified. They bought the GWoT, all of it up to and including Padilla and Guantanamo, just as surely as Fox did. That's why they have failed, again and again to defend the Constitution, to maintain their credibility, to protect Americans from an overbearing Executive drunk on its self-elevation above the law. they stopped being an opposition and became cheerleaders and still think they were right to do so, the status quo bush created is that which they now defend, little realising how much they have sold out.

I think most reptilians would take offense at being compared with Harry Reid.

Possibly.  I used to have a comprehensive list.  Not sure if Reid was on it - but he should be.
