Who will be the last five teams?

Algeria-Egypt is on-going.

Ukraine-Greece: will Ukraine make it?

Slovenia-Russia: this could be a shocker, after the meagre 2:1 for Russia in Moscow.

Bosnia-Portugal: Bosnia could be a surprise winner, too, bu IMO that would be less of a shocker.

France-Ireland: France should win easily. But there is Domenech. Will they fire Domenech at last if Ireland wins?

Uruguay-Costa Rica: Uruguay should clinch this.

Crumbs, those first three are real posers. My only feeling for algeria-egypt is that the 15,000 police who've been deployed is probably the minimum necessary. That one is really too close to call.

These are all tonight correct?  OK, Egypt, Ukraine, Russia, Bosnia, France i can not predict, and Uruguay - Costa Rica is a tossup because we don't yet know the effect of melo's visit.

No, Egypt-algeria is a one off play off. All square, play until it's settled. God help them if it goes to penalties, Escobar's fate awaits the guy who misses.

So before the match everyone said Ireland's game was to keep the ball in the air, so the French worked on control and keeping possession with short passes on the ground, right?

Wrong.

Teh Domenech is a fearsome beast.

(Anecdote: in 1973, France played Ireland in a World Cup decider. France had to win, a draw wouldn't do. France went one up at ten minutes from the end, but Ireland got one in at the last minute. France eliminated.

Heroically playing in defence for France was one Raymond Domenech.)

Two minutes left for France to score... if not, Portugal will be the sole favourite to go through today.

BBC Sport - Football : Live text - World Cup play-offs
EVEN BIGGER CONTROVERSY. This is quite unbelievable. Long ball over the top - and two French players are offside - but forget that, Thierry Henry juggles the ball CLEARLY with his hand before squaring for William Gallas to bundle in. The Republic of Ireland have been robbed here. Robbed.

I don't understand professional sport. How can Henry not tell the referee that he used his hand?

I can't say I would have been disappointed if Ireland had managed to score in the last few minutes.

It was that clear cut.

At the end of the game the journalists (Irish and Scottish) were saying that they would have done the same, that if you are a professional footballer that's what you do.

That is probably true but then, I don't want to ever hear again that sportsmen are role models.
Although, maybe the point is that it's precisely the kind of behaviour that is encouraged in today's world. But that makes me sick.

After the changing of the rules to seed the candidates, then this, the Irish would have a reasonable right to feel that there was a conspiracy against them.

If there had been a conspiracy, it would have been far easier to call the penalty kick 5 minutes earlier.
