Please see my horribly formatted diary on AIG and europe using data taken from the IG report. here The amount of money that the US government pumped into Europe and then the additional monies guaranteed is really incredible.

Condolences!  I have had similar problems. If any here can shed light on how to insure the reliable equivalent of a tab function I, and, I suspect, rootless2 would love to know. For all I know the html could be amongst those shown under "allowed html" as there is no identification of function available for those to whom it is not "intuitively obvious."

Use <pre></pre> tags for
pre-formatted text
which displays in a monospaced font.

Do I take it correctly that when I start off with text that will properly display a table in a WP format and place
 at the beginning and
at the end of said table that the tabs, spaces and carriage returns used to generate the table will be preserved? Or should I start with a spreadsheet?

Do not use tabs but only spaces and carriage returns to align text. In your word processor, use a monospaced/typewriter font such as Courier, Gothic, or indeed Monospaced.

LOL!  I used Hexadecimal Art to pass my Motorola Exercisor programming class. We had to write a working program in assembly language, but had not been shown drivers for monitors or printers.  Most of the other students were old hands and already knew these tricks, but this was my first, (and last) programming course. So I played with the sixteen characters I was given and realized I could write a recognizable "word" thus: F001F00D.  So I wrote a program that was: Set Pointer xxxxxxxx, Load Register A F001, Store A, Increment Pointer, Load Register A F00D, Store A, Increment Pointer. There was also something with the counter. Then we used Dump to examine the register and there it was: a register full of foolfood.

Woops! I forgot to preview and now see that I needed to "neuter" the < pre>< /pre> html.  Even a space will do the trick.  Fun! Fun!  Poco a poco apriendo.

Have you noted what Migeru says in his comment in the diary?

Migeru:

Please, when copying text from elsewhere into a diary or comment, remember to preview and use HTML formatted instead of Auto-format if necessary, as auto-format will replace meaningless line breaks with <br> tags.

Right Justified Columns: (w/ < pre>< /pre>)

Head1....,Head2....,Head3....,Head4

1 alpha       a         b         c
2 alpha      ab        ab        ab
5 alpha   abcde     abcde     abcde

(without)

Head1....,Head2....,Head3....,Head4

1 alpha       a         b         c
2 alpha      ab        ab        ab
5 alpha   abcde     abcde     abcde

And I copied the "with" table, but deleted "pre-pre" to generate the without table.

how to insure the reliable equivalent of a tab function

You must use tables.

The ASCII standard has the bit pattern X0001001 as the Control Code for a horizontal tab.  I assumed - silly me! - HTML kept the ASCII standards.

Now that I went and looked ... nope.

So ... never mind.
