Shows how useless the PvdA is for not getting the post. They should've sent Bos to Brussels, would've solved a lot of their problems. Now we get 15 years of VVD after about 30 years of CDA Commissioners.

I'd hope Kroes goes to trade (Ferrero-Waldner will be there as a placeholder at first, the Austrians are still sending Molterer AFAIK). That would allow Alexander Italianer to become Director General at Competition.

Ah, no, they're sending Johannes Hahn (the Austrians). Kroes should have decent cards, though.

Johannes Hahn

An empty suit. I guess they got rid of a problem, too...

The problem was in the coalition itself, in that Faymann wanted to keep Ferrero-Waldner but the ÖVP (from which she comes) somehow had the right to nominate and wanted to send Molterer. They somehow ended up cancelling each other out. So then they sent Hahn.

I see Hahn wanted to exit CERN in his term in Austria and that his PhD Thesis in philosophy has been criticised for plagiarism. If anything that should disqualify him from Science and Research.

Kroes has been pretty tough at Competition. What's better about Italianer?

Doubtlessly Kroes has been good at Competition, but another person might also have been good. Mario Monti was good, before her. It's a well-functioning Directorate General. Even Oettinger might do well, though I don't yet know whether he'll get it or if he'll inherit Verheugen's post.

The rest is arguing in the Dutch interest. Director Generals are important, nearly or just as important as Commissioners. Better to have Kroes move to another big portfolio, because then we'd have more.

.
EU commissioners fulfill a single term on a post and move over to a new portfolio, that's why Kroes will not continue as Competition Commissioner, a job she performed extremely well. The new post for Neelie Kroes will involve a New Europe with development of the Internet, telecommunication and new media.

Dutch media reports say Kroes, 68, could be given either the external trade or the telecoms portfolio and could also be named Commission vice-president.

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."

I'd hope it's Trade.
