One is the spinmeister for a minor political party, the other is one of Finland's foremost valve amplifier experts. The latter forced me last night to listen to an audio comparison of many guitar loudspeakers from manufacturers large and small in 'scientifically based' recordings. There were indeed audible differences, but none that couldn't be balanced out by mic type or placement.

We have similar discussions about politicians.

Mmmm, I love my Vox AC30s, even if I haven't fired 'em up in years. The sound is gorgeous.

I wish I could remember the name of the small English family loudspeaker company that his tests were intended to show off. (It began with a T) They certainly improved on the Celestions in my opinion, but then I never was a fan of jangly toppy speakers in the studio - though on stage I can see the point.

I've actually got Tannoys at home - I rescued a couple of big mothers from a failed studio years ago. I like my speakers loud, simple, heavy and flat - none of your sub-woofer nonsense ;-)

Steve Hillage uses one onstage mounted on a stand near his guitar so's he can get feeback whenever he likes without having massive on stage volume.

I've always wanted to try little speakers stuck to the bridge with a volume pedal to control it and see how that owrked.

One of my old analog production tricks was to feed a recorded track back through a speaker at volume, and stick a tuned Strat live in front of it. And record the line from the Strat on a new track. This is the equivalent of sprinkling fairy dust.

Either that or lead pop shields.

The other great topic of conversation was turning meeting rooms into Faraday cages so mobiles would be immobilized. I think we spent half an hour on whether conductive paint, copper mesh or metallic wallpaper would be the best solution. It was an exciting evening, as you can see.
