If you have images on flickr, as I do, I can explain how I do it.
In your photostream, click on an image.
When it opens click on "all sizes".
Choose medium (about 333 x 500, or some size similar)
Highlight the code in the box below the image once the medium size is showing.
Copy the highlighted code
Open ET & click "post a comment"
Paste into that box.
Now from where it says    title, over & to include the " marks before > highlight & delete.
Preview & your image should show in the preview mode.
Hit post & you`re done.
I`ll check back to see if you got it. If you have a problem, say so & I will try to explain it better. It`s quite straightforward though once you do it a few times.

In previous attempts I was not copying enough of the URL...

Thanks!

I will now presume that my instructions were adequate,so hurray for me.
But for you, you now have the responsibility to use your new found knowledge to delight us with more images such as the beauty you just posted.
Congrats.

That was something I was wondering about, actually. This is EUROtrib, not USAtrib--although sometimes one wonders. So is it better to post pictures of beautiful mountainsides and pastures, or would people be happier to see pictures of American capitalism at work?

Wouldn`t that depend on composition, technical expertise, light & shadow etc. I don`t understand the question possibly but this is a photography thread, albeit in ET. Aren`t images universal, at least in the mind of the viewer.
Are there many instances of pictures of American capitalism at work in this ongoing Friday Photos section of this blog?
Personally I definitely prefer pix of people, places & things that demonstrate a photographic/artistic quality, such as the mountains & pastures posted above, no matter from which geographical location.
I believe though that there are some who would wonder which CEO of a mega American capitalist corporation owns the ranch-land depicted in that image.
I see it as a beautiful artistic composition.

But I have photo-bucket and they provide about six different codes you can cut and paste and none of them have worker for me here on ET.  I used the <a href and the photo comes up on preview but when I press post it refuses to post while throwing the book at me!!

You need to replace the < a href=", with < img src=" (without the spaces) and you end the direct URL with "> (no space)

I use photobucket too. I don't copy the html code, but the direct link (second down). I type this in the comment and paste the link in:

<img src="paste direct link between these quotes">

It's simple and it doesn't get stuck in the works.

I use the one marked html code thren edit it by removing everythingup to and including the part where it says blank">

then removing the piece that says  border="0" alt="Photobucket"></a<p> So remove the red text when youve copied the similar piece from your own link
