Last week In Wales inquired about scanning film. As luck would have it I discovered a new book a few days ago that addresses a lot of the issues concerning methodology, equipment capabilities, and choices. It's titled
Scanning Negatives and Slides
by Sacha Steinhoff. The second edition here in the US was published October 2009 by Rocky Nook, Inc. and printed in Canada. The original edition apparently was published in Germany.

Good find! I've not had chance to do more google research on it yet.

Steinhoff attaches a CD to the book that compares scanned images using various equipment. Seems the Nikon Super Cool Scan 9000 will scan 35mm up to 23x65mm negatives and slides in addition to medium format. Its cost is about $2,000 + though. His photo analysis shows film scanners besting the better flat beds for film scanning. Not surprising.

Amazon lists it as STG2500+. I seem to remember it approaching €3,000 when I was scanner shopping. I Decided the Coolscan 5000 + V750 was cheaper, good enough for medium format and allowed good document, print and large format scanning. For half the price (or less) of a 5000.
