It just dawned on me that with Darling being Chancellor, what are his chances on becoming Labour's top dog? Will Brown step down and leave the ruins to Darling after a potentially crushing Labour defeat? And if yes, would it be a "good thing"?

I think there's a simple answer to this; No and No.

Darling is a man entirely without charisma. There was a time when such a person could, by competence alone, reasonably aspire to becoming PM. However the job is different now and requires somebody at ease with the media and able to use it to sell policy to the public. Sadly, whenever Darling appears on TV he looks trapped and worried like he's been caught shoplifting biscuits.
