I am increasingly of the conviction that the American distaste and distrust of government stems at least in part from their bloated Mil-Ind complex. After all, take any European public sector, add a 20-25 % overhead and see how efficiently it performs.

And that's precisely what the military expenditures amount to: Spending that is paid out of taxes but which does not result in any of the amenities usually associated with public service.
