  • Republicans approve of the American farmer, but they are willing to help him go broke.
  • They stand four-square for the American home-- but not for housing.
  • They are strong for labor-- but they are stronger for restricting labor's rights.
  • They favor minimum wage--the smaller the minimum wage the better.
  • They endorse educational opportunity for all--but they won't spend money for teachers or for schools.
  • They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine-- for people who can afford them.
  • They consider electrical power a great blessing--but only when the private power companies get their rake-off.
  • They think American standard of living is a fine thing--so long as it doesn't spread to all the people.
  • And they admire of Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.
Harry S. Truman

A conservative Catholic movement has gradually gathered momentum in France. It doesn't have much political visibility as a movement, it's fought over by Sarkozy and Philippe de Villiers, who has joined up with Libertas.

The mad viscount (who thinks there are Muslim tunnels under French airports) is already far, far away and far right. All they need is for the newly-beloved-of-the-Pope Lefebvrian horror show to join them.

But at least all this gives a much clearer identity tag to Decan Ganley and Libertas.

Yeah. Having a neo-Nazi bishop join them would be a great propaganda win... for us.

Oh, I think we can put a holocaust denying abortion opponent to good use, if they're stupid enough to enlist him. Neo-Nazis and religious fruitcakes are two areas where guilt by association actually does sometimes work.

He's been recruiting the Polish far right party which got wiped out in the most recent elections but still exists.

If you get a chance, could you see your way to writing a short summary? It'd be nice to get that into the English speaking world ... I suspect that not a lot of the news organisations west of Germany speak a lot of Polish.

Here we go.

Some excerpt:

The Polish Libertas line-up has yet to be finalised but is expected to draw on figures from the populist Self Defence party and the ultra-Catholic League of Polish Families (LPR), an anti-abortion, anti-Semitic, anti-gay grouping.

European Tribune - Comments - Libertas: a european party of the far-right.
Apparently Libertas has been recognised in all 27 EU member states despite the evil machinations of shadowy Brussels Bureaucrats. So says Declan Ganley

He is not completely truthful. (Surprise!)

The swedish election authority has a wonderfully clear site, as long as you speak swedish. So lets see what they say about registered party names.

Registrerade partibeteckningar

Ok, lots of swedish. But the alphabetical list is easy enough to understand. Lets check "L".

Registrerade partibeteckningar

Laholmspartiet 2006-01-23 Laholm
Levande Roslagsbygd 2006-02-23 Norrtälje
Lidingöpartiet 1978-04-13 Lidingö
Linköpingspartiet 1995-12-15 Linköping
Ljusnarsbergs obundna Kommunparti 1982-02-18 Ljusnarsberg
Lysekilspartiet.nu 2001-11-08 Lysekil
Läns(bytar)partiet 2006-02-28 Heby
Långshyttepartiet 2009-01-12 Hedemora

8 local parties, but no Libertas.

To be absolutely fair, there is no requirement to register in order to run. You just need to order and deliver ballots to the voters, or get enough to write your party name on an empty ballot. What registering does is protecting your party name, because before you spend all that cash and energy you might want to be sure that your competitors does not also decide to run as "Libertas".

Registering takes just 1500 signatures (for national or EP election) and a seat needs somewhere around 100 000 votes. So it is a fairly good measurement of if a party has any intention of actually running.

A vote for PES is a vote for EPP! A vote for EPP is a vote for PES! Support the coalition, vote EPP-PES in 2009!

Can't find any appropriate association with that name in the Finnish database of associations either. There's one organisation with that name, but it was registered in 1993, presumably before the existence of this Libertas.

There is also the issue of candidate registration. If the party is registered it can also (if it wants) officially designate its candidates. If it does not, voters (or others) are free to 'nominate' others by writing in names on the party list.

So, if Libertas doesn't register it means that a person (or persons) can order their own Libertas ballots here, and distribute those to voting halls to sabotage and create confusion around this party.
They still have until the 2nd March to register though.
