The focus on Nabucco as a potential alternative to Russian gas makes no sense given that the only credible supplier of gas for the pipeline in the requisite volumes (a key requirement to get it financed) is Russia. Worries about over-dependency on Russian gas in Central and Eastern Europe would best be met in the short term by building connections to these countries from Western Europe (so that countries that do have access to other suppliers can help those that don't) and in the long term by helping these countries move as much as possible away from gas as a primary source of energy (via energy efficiency and the development of renewables).
