I checked the OECD and apparently for Americans, they are only measuring federal tax, not state tax.

This might shock people who don't know the American tax system, but as a New Yorker, I pay more state tax than I do federal tax. A lot more. It's not even close.

I'd venture to say that the USA is actually up near Sweden when state taxes are accounted for.

Re: State taxes. Yes, I pointed out previously that many Americans pay more State and local taxes than Federal. Virginia doesn't have a particularly high State income tax rate, but local real estate, personal property, and sales taxes add up to more than the Federal taxes.

PS: In addition to that, Americans who can afford it pay high insurance premiums to cover services and benefits that are funded in some countries by public taxes. Furthermore, insurance usually only covers partial costs of these benefits. These insurance costs are, therefore, tantamount to a tax and are often treated as such on Federal and State tax returns where they are a deduction from gross income.

Health/medical insurance
Dental insurance
Long Term Care Insurance
