Just sat and watched it. Two absolutely ridiculous Spanish defensive errors, but applause to The Americans for making them pay, and Heroic defending on their part too.

No doubt there will be black armbands in Madrid tonight.

I saw the first 15 minutes and the last 40 (missed the first goal). I give more credit to Team USA for making Spain play silly, with the pressure. In the first 15 minutes, they nailed Spain to their own goal! On the basis of the last 40 minutes, (1) it is a well organised team (it's one thing Spain's defenders tricked each other and played the ball to the enemy, but the guy was well positioned and quick to react), (2) I have a feeling that we will see more of keeper Howard.

But I think the guys on dKos need to be told this is not the World Cup. Truth be told, there are probably only 2 or 3 teams that can live with the full Spain team right now and USA ain't one of them.

don't worry, neither are England.

Diary on dKos says he/she can't wait for the World Cup next year.  Sounds like they know.

And they beat Spain, so pssshhh to the rest of that.  A win is a win.

Oh sure, a win is a win. England are still living off winning the world cup 43 years ago. And I can still remember the smell of beating Germany 5 - 1 a few years back.

But achieving anything in a real competition ? If only.

I was on holiday on Rhodes, saw Germany go 1-0 up, and so we decided it was going to be one of those nights, and went for a meal in  the old city as it wasn't an important game.

Bit of a shock when we came out to dancing drunken England fans in the streets.

So hang on -- it was the full Spain team, according to Mig and DoDo.

So how can we not be among the two or three who can play with the full Spain team when our guys just, you know, beat them?

Judge rules -- Epic WIN.

The US started this tournament in the top 14 teams according to the FIFA classification...

they are frequently up around the top ten, this goes a way towards showing that the figures aren't just being fiddled to up the profile of the sport in the US as some have assumed.

They're in South Africa because they are North America champions, which means they're better than Mexico.

Not true.  At least not in the South.  It's the most common form there.

Still, those figures are troublesome: some teams tend to be up and then underperform in tournaments. Prime exhibit: the Czech team.

Then again, as Helen indicates, this is not a tournament that is taken seriously. (Just watch how Brazil played today. Or better, don't watch...) The WC will also mean more matches (for the teams in the finals).

Oh sure, the players were there in body, but in spirit .. . they're on the beach alrady. For them, this was just a friendly.

I'm not trying to be mean here, I'm sure we'd be cock a hoop if England beat Spain right now (staggered and amazed would be closer), but it only means stuff in real competitions (and the confederations cup don't qualify)
