End of school year here in Switzerland, July 4th weekend in the US, what else is going on? Any good music? We just The Boss here in Bern, and apparently he rocked out for almost 3 straight hours. A friend who was there said it was a lot of fun!

More stage managed than you might think. The bit where Bruce picks up song request boards from the audience, and then pretends to pick one of them to play is the simplest kind of conjuring with an eager audience. It happens every show.

More or less. There may be a short list, but basically he goes down to stage edge to find what he's looking for from a complete selection supplied by the audience. If they all held up 'Born in the USA' signs you can be sure that bit of stage stuff would be dropped ;-)

I'm only a cynic because I've been in major band situations where this kind of stuff is discussed. Audience behaviour is quite predictable, and this kind of stuff is not done in exploitation imo, but as part of putting on a more exciting show for the fans - like pyro.

And I am in total admiration for a guy who can put that much energy into a 3 hour show and look like he's enjoying it, at pensionable age. I'd be hard pressed to carry a plectrum for 100 yards.

BTW The best sources of information about a band are the roadies. They know everything.

I just mentioned Born to Run, because it's, in my experience, easily the most popular of his songs.  And to not like it is practically treason in this country.

I thought he'd said he won't play it outside the US.

It's a mis-understood song, the main lyrics expose the  jingoistic seeming chorus as being sarcastic (ironic ?), but sadly all people hear is the apparent triumphalism. So it gets a good response in the US and probably can get a mixed one elsewhere.

Thanks for the correction - it sounds logical. Though I doubt if the Finnish audience at the Tampere gig would have been less than ecstatic if he had played it. Even the PM (he was there with his betrothed) would have stood up and waved his arms.

He may not have played it now, but he certainly played Born in the USA in the fairly recent Live DVD from Barcelona. From what I recall, he actually seemed to enjoy playing the song, too. (Anyway, I already had to go to Tampere for a project steering board meeting and for the Sauna Open Air the same week, so this Turkulainen decided he had seen enough of Tampere for one week ;-)

Commerce sent us an email saying we could go watch the fireworks on the DoC roof tomorrow, which is right on the Mall.  But no food, booze or smoking.

And then there's the headache of dealing with a million people trying to get home on the Metro.  L'Enfant Plaza, where I'd be getting on in the District, is pretty busy during off-peak hours, mobbed during peak hours, and Hell on Earth when any kind of event is going on.  It took half an hour to get a train -- and when I got one, I was pinned into about six inches of space by a bazillion freaks in Friar Tuck outfits -- when the idiot Pope put on his little show at the stadium last year, and the fireworks are probably more popular than the Pope.

So I'm thinking teevee is the way to go.  Normally I go up to Iwo Jima, which has a really great view, with my aunt and uncle, but they're not around this year.

It's cheaper to fool people into thinking they are drinking a full bodied beer by making it stronger than by making it more flavoursome. So they use "Brewing candy" as a fermentable sugar. Thus the average "lager" in the UK is 5% ABV, as opposed to the average bitter being 4 - 4.4%. It's cheaper to make 5% nonsense than a decent tasting weaker brew.

However, please note, I am not saying that the US make lousy beers that are strong. Their beers are good, but imo, they are stronger than they need to be to encourage me to drink a lot of them.

I suspect that this is because, until recently, I am fairly sure they were prohibited from saying what the strength of the beer was and so, given that they don't have beer duty (ie a tax related directly to strength) so there was nothing to be gained by making a flavoursome beer that was weak.

Yea, I know, but ya gotta go where the beers are. The WH is a good pub with a great range of beer, but manages to do so largely because it can charge top dollar in one of the most well-heeled places in Britain.

I almost never go there unless i'm right on top of it cos the prices can be steep, there's a fab Timmie Taylors pub just over the bridge in Putney where I much prefer to go.
