If you consider the recent email leaks from the McCain campaign that made Palin look pretty bad, and the rather free talk that McCain staffers engaged in with the Vanity Fair reporters, your theory attains plausibility.

Republican elites really don't like messy primary battles. They prefer to rally around an anointed one early, especially someone who isn't nutty. My guess is there is a concerted effort to grease the skids for Romney by taking down potential rivals.

If Huckabee wakes up with a horse's head in his bed next week, then we'll know something really is up.

Perhaps.  I think it'd be quite stupid on their part to push Huckabee out in favor of Mittens.  Huckabee would have a much better shot at beating Obama, in my opinion.  With Mittens, you're more likely to lose, well, almost everything.
