Nice wintery effects with the ice, sun low on the horizon, long shadows, seemingly isolated locale, etc.

Cool! Expert question in the wrong folder: did you protect your camera's CCD somehow against direct Sunlight? (My own fresh experience: just the mirrored Sun at the edge of the lense was enough for the next picture to be noisy.)

The lens is coated with something that helps to reduce the glare but I also focused on a part of the scene where the sunlight wasn't too strong.  I've not noticed any effect like you describe to be honest.

Fabulous shots.
I love the first one.

I took quite a lot like that first shot on yesterday morning's walk.

Sadly I am without the Olympus 510 at the moment. It's closer to you than me, having been taken by my eldest to Aix. I'm thinking of acquiring a new digital SLR, so I'll probably have to reread the ET photonerd comments of the last years ;-)

Whatever it is, its performance with an outboard flash will be crucial. Though having played with DC LED lights, I am quite intrigued.

all those replies were surely very entertaining. I've been lurking for quite a few years and mostly been reading eurotrib during elections. I'm from Germany but have blogged in the past mostly about US politics and have mostly frequent US blogs.
