They multiplied the money by moving it to hyperspace so that they could spend the same money on loaning it out, hedging the better, swapping the collateral and taking out an insurance policy against default. especially since the riskier the loan and the more chance of default, the more likely they were to get higher multiples of the same money by more collateral swaps and subsequent insurance policy payouts.
