German politician, environmental champion Hermann Scheer dies | Germany | Deutsche Welle | 15.10.2010
One of Germany's most outspoken environmental politicians has died at the age of 66. Hermann Scheer, a Social Democratic member of the German parliament, won the alternative Nobel prize for his work on renewable energy.

Damn. Just a reminder, he wrote Andrea Ypsilanti's election programme when she ran in Hessen against Roland Koch.

Democracy Now! aired an excellent interview with him today.

Her bid to become PM of Hessen state was ended by an internal rebellion in late 2008, as told in The Traitor (you commented in it!). After the 2009 federal elections when the SPD re-shuffled its leadership, she raised her voice to push for a more left-wing line.

Since then, early this year, she created a think-tank with a name that's difficult to render in English, hope this form makes sense: Institute for Solidary Modernity (ISM). It is to foster red-red-green cooperation and alternative ideas to neoliberalism. Right-wing media keeps attacking it [link in German].
