Samuel Bowles is out of the mainstream on two counts: he takes into consideration history and economic history and he considers history of economic thought, as it used to be called. The mainstream will probably sniff and note that when one goes off into strange areas one is likely to come up with strange theories. Nothing to see here.

As the Dutch said while fighting the Spanish: "It is not necessary to have hope in order to persevere."
