They obviously can't make any break with Israel given American politics, but they could do all sorts of things to get Israel to back off. And that begins by getting cozier with the Palestinians. All sorts of ways to do this. Open conduits for humanitarian aid is just a start, but the US can't jump with both feet down. They have to apply the pressure with smaller measures. Those measures are enough to get Israeli leaders nervous, given the fortress paranoid mentality.

Well if Obama intended to employ such a strategy, I think he would have engaged it long before now.

Netanyahu's just displayed arrogance in giving Biden a rough up on landing in Israel kind of suggests that Israel might just ignore any proPalestinian sentiments on Obama's part and continue what it has been doing. Not only the timed announcement of 1600 planned homes in East Jerusalem, but also the more recent announcement of intent to build 50,000 such homes in East Jerusalem in the future kind of makes plain the Likud government's attitude toward the US, or at least the Obama administration.
