Just a few days after Israel's Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that "the building in Jerusalem and in all other places will continue in the same way as has been customary over the last 42 years," the Quartet `condemned' the East Jerusalem building plan and plans for the continuation of settlement expansion in the West Bank.

MOSCOW - The so-called Quartet of Middle East mediators called on Israel to freeze all settlement activities and denounced Israel's aim to build new housing in East Jerusalem Friday.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon read a joint statement by the members -- Russia, the United States, the U.N. and the European Union -- following a meeting of the group in Moscow.

Ban Ki-Moon: Israel Must Stop Building On Occupied Land

"The world has condemned Israel's settlement plans in east Jerusalem," Ban told a news conference after his brief tour. "Let us be clear. All settlement activity is illegal anywhere in occupied territory and must be stopped."
