I saw some things in Cambodia that I couldn't deal with emotionally, and the stark difference between the children there and in Laos (which has, I believe, a pretty similar GPD per capita) got me thinking that the behavior of children is the strongest "on the street" indicator of the health of a culture - as they're not old enough to project an image or hide what they are feeling and experiencing.
