There were 56 or 57 people with a D after their names in the Senate at the time. And another two or three without an R after their names. You need 50 votes to make fiscal policy. While I understand that party discipline is tenuous, this is about as good a margin as you are going to get under any electoral system.

Also, perhaps I misremember, but I do not recall the Democratic Party precisely backing Lamont after he defeated the Lieberzombie in the primary. To put it kindly. Although that is something of a tangent, as it arguably precedes the present crisis.

Your memory is incorrect. Lieberman won on Republican votes. Note the 10% Republican poll.
Note the turnout in the previous election. And Lamont ran a terrible campaign - symptomatic of his "netroots" support.

It's worth reading about how Clinton and Carter managed their (similar) majorities in the US Senate. Obama proved FAR more capable of getting results.

The Democratic Party backed Lieberman.  For example,  Obama and the Clintons spoke in favor of the Lieberkrank, tho' I don't have a link handy to prove it.

Ever since I learnt about confirmation bias I've started seeing it everywhere

Before the primary. After the primary the Party supported Lamont - although they were clearly not convinced he had the chops to win - for good reason.
