Your memory is incorrect. Lieberman won on Republican votes. Note the 10% Republican poll.
Note the turnout in the previous election. And Lamont ran a terrible campaign - symptomatic of his "netroots" support.

It's worth reading about how Clinton and Carter managed their (similar) majorities in the US Senate. Obama proved FAR more capable of getting results.
