Why is this holy crap? Isn't the GOP pushing for Romney and bad numbers for Gingrich are good, then?

The nightmarish (from the GOP insiders point of view) perspective of Gingrich winning in SC and possibly having a shot at the nomination is what Marshall calls "a near-death experience for Republicans".

Marshall thinks that "Romney still has close to a lock on the GOP nomination", however.

The numbers give an idea of what Gingrich would have to face if he got the nomination.

Gingrich is the closest you'll find to a male Sarah Palin as far as unfavorable ratings go.

I'd said a few years back that I wasn't worried about Palin, even in a tough economy, because the public here had made up its mind that it would never vote for her.

Gingrich isn't in quite as bad shape as she is, but he's not far from it.  The bulk of the polls put Obama above 50% and up by 10+ against Gingrich, and with his approval moving up slowly but steadily, I'd expect that gap to widen if the trend continues.

A Gingrich nomination could be very ugly for the GOPers in November.
