A consequence of the Megaupload action (Washington's Blog):

Megaupload Type Shutdowns and Patriot Act Are Killing Cloud Storage

And the action itself:

It sounds like something more reminiscent of a James Bond film than real life.

When police officers attempted to arrest the man accused of being one of the world's biggest internet pirates at his multi-million pound mansion, things were a bit trickier than they might have expected.

Instead of giving himself up easily, Kim Dotcom refused to let the police in, activated a number of locking mechanisms in his sprawling home and then hid in a safe room.

that the guy is not New Zealand-born (my snobbery is not a matter of morals, but of aesthetics). Kim Dotcom, né SchmuckSchmitz :

Dotcom's lavish life of parties and luxury - National - NZ Herald News

Dotcom, who is a native German, received residency in New Zealand despite declaring two convictions, which he said had been wiped by "clean slate" legislation in his home country.

Officials originally approved his purchase of a $30 million Coatesville mansion, saying enough time had passed. However, they later decided he did not meet the "good character" test to buy land here and the sale was blocked.

Instead, he has a long-term lease on the property

Coatesville eh. I've got a niece who lives up there. Rental properties are cheaper out there in the sticks.

Kim Dotcom's mansion underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, including a pool filled with imported spring water and a $15,000 custom-made ladder, bizarre artwork, secret underground passages and a strict ban on photos.

A source close to the team that did the renovation work - said to have cost about $4 million - revealed that the project was referred to as the "extreme makeover - millionaire edition".

He's got the name and face for a Bond movie character. He might be worth a pile, but a pile of what, I don't know. If the house has a mortgage greater than its value I won't be in the least surprised.

My mistake. He doesn't own the house:
the New Zealand Government declined his application to buy the land on the basis that he did not meet the "good character" test

about the takedown of Megaupload, is the question of political manipulation of the police/judicial process.

For the promoters of SOPA, the timing couldn't be better. The propaganda effect of taking down a big, bad pirate is huge (Dotcom's bubble got pricked, boo hoo).

I'm wondering if the FBI could have gotten away with such a blatantly politically-motivated stunt on US soil? I'm guessing it's much easier to lean on a docile, compliant client government to do the dirty work.

I hear Dodd threatened to withdraw the Democrats' funding over failure to pass SOPA.

Dodd Threatens Obama with Hollywood Campaign Fund Boycott

"Candidly, those who count on . . . 'Hollywood' for support need to understand that this industry is watching very carefully who's going to stand up for them when their job is at stake," Dodd told Fox News.

Maybe they came to an arrangement.

Wait this is important. Someone is wrong on the Internet.

I does remind me quite a bit of the original Pirate Bay raid in Sweden 2006. And there was quite a bit of leaning going on.

A vote for PES is a vote for EPP! A vote for EPP is a vote for PES! Support the coalition, vote EPP-PES in 2009!
