the wealthy assuming the role of the old nobility

Reminds me.

In the game Europa Universalis II you as the ruler control a number of sliders with which to set the charateristics of your society. One of these regulates the character of your uppermost strata in society: on one end they are stinking rich and thus noble - a merchant republic - and on the other end they are blueblooded nobility and thus rich - a warrior nobility. You then get bonuses for either trade or cavalry depending on your settings.

There is no option for not having an upper class, although another slider controls your peasantrys status on a scale from serfs to free peasants.

EU is, perhaps, my all time favorite computer game. I have played it for months in solo mode and brought home a hub in the '90s so my son and his friends could play a multi-player version, though I did not participate. It and Crusader Kings are, IMO, two of the best historical geography teaching devices and EU will teach about many of the historically significant events, especially in Europe. IMO, EU III did not result in a significant improvement and I still prefer EU II, though I haven't played in quite a while.

As the Dutch said while fighting the Spanish: "It is not necessary to have hope in order to persevere."
