I either lost my wallet or it was stolen in the Zurich Hauptbahnhof.  Now I must depend on the efficiency of the Zurich banks, and the kindness of my friends here to get some money once I file a police report.

I went to the police station but they told me to come back tomorrow.  There wasn't much money in the wallet, but there was my bank card and I have no money at the moment.

Hopefully the police do a better job than the Italians did when mine was stolen last summer (in the train in Innsbruck actually). Their first attempt at a report claimed that the theft happened (sic; not "would happen"....) 2 weeks in the future, and the bank didn't want to accept it.

the bank was just as incompetent as the police in your case.  they should have realized that there was a mistake.

there's this police walking all around the Hauptbahnhof and then when you need them, you realize they are not police, just security people pretending to be police.

Anyway, the cleaning guys were nice and let me check the clear garbage bags they were hauling away to see if perhaps the thief threw away the wallet with the cards and kept the cash.

I had the advantage over you that I was on the train home, where I had my American bank card (which I hardly ever use, since I don't keep much money in the account), and Amex delivered a replacement in one day (so you do get something in return for the annual fee....). And just by chance I had somehow just gotten into DB's bahn.comfort category, so the new BahnCard that was waiting in the mail also served as a replacement for the stolen one.... which was just as well, as both the Austrian and the Italian police managed to screw up (in completely different ways) the term "BahnCard".

well if one can be lucky in one's misfortune, you were.

I know that the Swiss will get me a bank card quickly, but it will still take until Monday.

I have been twanked.  Imagine extending an offer to someone who is in a difficult situation, and then letting them down.  I just find this really cruel.

this happened once a few years ago and it led to a lot of hardship for a few days so I was anticipating the same thing.  You have no idea how relieved I am.

Thank you, Helen and the rest of you, for your good wishes.

It's interesting how this sort of thing always seems to happen in places that are thought of as safe, such as Zurich HB or a train in Innsbruck. It never happens to me in Naples or Rome, while the first place I was ever robbed was in Harrods in London (and I'm not referring to their prices....)

really, in Harrods?

I was also pickpocketed in Geneva, which is well known for it, and in Montreal, Canada.
