Load shifting and cost effectiveness - if they live up to expectations. But, unfortunately, much of the best technology is German and I don't think the Japanese have too much experience here. In summer the peak load expands into the evening as houses take time to cool and this is exacerbated by high humidity.

Those would be general traits, not something Japan-specific. I think in Japan, solar thermal is neither geographically advantageous nor that much favoured by the feed-in law (due to lack of distinction between solar thermal and PV, the latter, still being cheaper, offers higher profits to investors).
