Welcome to the new version of European Tribune. It's just a new layout, so everything should work as before - please report bugs here.

Not wanting to belabor the point, but the gray bars on each side of the page are eating up a good third of the screen, even though I'm using a 22" monitor (resolution 1680x1050, FF18.0 under Win7). The diaries text are squeezed into barely one half of the screen width.

Any way to adjust this?

They're two thirds on my 27" if I was insane enough to run Safari full screen!

However, I'm actually wondering what to do with the extra space.

Simply expanding the width of the article text isn't terribly useful, since you just end up with unwieldy text widths.

I could set it up to increase the font size to maintain the text measure, but then you'll have very few lines per screen.

Thoughts?

but of course you're stuck with a population of users who are, by their very nature, unsatisfied and unsatisfiable. There MUST be a better way! There simply MUST!

I'm sure someone must have done a fisking of web site layouts in function of ideological orientation.

  • Libertarian sites : highly user-configurable (colours, fonts, diary lists...) to the extent that every user is seeing something different, and there is no commonality at all.
  • Authoritarian sites : Fixed everything, set up for a 640x480 screen and never redefined.

Etc...

Perhaps replacing the grey with some pretty picture would satisfy? Making it look more intentional and less wasted space.

control-plus to make your font bigger... the bigger the text the less grey padding.
i.e. the display width is fixed in terms of number of characters displayed, and is padded out to the width of your window.

Any other solution means you lose most of the control over layout.

<fiddles with the FF window width to see how it changes>

Ah, OK: I get it now. The "fixed number of characters displayed" rule is not bad at all, actually; keeps the reading pleasant.

My regret then would be that the very long comment threads (like in this diary) apparently cannot use more space on the right and extend up to the right hand gray bar. The "old layout" seemed to me more flexible in that regard (or was it?).

Honestly, I think that thread was harder to read in the old format. Some of the very long subthreads got squinched up to the right so the comments were hard to read. They're easier now. It seems to me.

All right: I guess we'll have to try it out, see how it feels after a while...

The much smaller indentation on comments helps a lot there.

While there's no question the upgrade is an upgrade, i still miss the dynamic width. i do use safari wide screen (to handle many tabs), and the auto width functioned one-wall-free (flawlessly.) and yes, the new indents do seem to make it more readable. for me it's always been hard to find exactly to which comment a reply belongs, but then i'm an arachnid.

if the grey bars become a photo, then we're in twitter land, in which i think i might still choose grey bar.
