Vast police operation throughout Italy this morning against a secret parallel police sect. The two heads of the organization, Gaetano Saya e Riccardo Sindoca, have been arrested. Police have confiscated evidence in nine Italian regions. The secret rightwing organization styles itself as Jewish-Christian legionaries in the war against Islam and the Anti-Christ.
Gaetano Saya was a member of the outlawed Masonic lodge, Propaganda Due, and prides himself as a close friend of P2 founder Licio Gelli and the deceased General Santovito. Santovito, head of the SISMi in the late 70's early 80's, masterminded the subversive SuperSISMi, implicated in many rightwing terrorist actions, most notably the bombing of the Bologna Train Station in August 1980 which left over eighty dead.
The blitz stems from the Genova Procura's investigation into the death of Fabrizio Quattrocchi, an Italian mercenary brutally murdered by Iraqi insurgents in April 2004. The Procura declined to comment whether Quattrocchi was a member of the organization.
Italian sources at la Repubblica and il Corriere della Sera. Paper tigress over at DailyKos has translated the two updated articles in her diary . I could not have done a better job. The story is Front-page in Italy, but not the main headline grabber. After all this is not the first time some self-anointed Grand Master has put up a parallel cop or militia structure in Italy. There was a case in Naples several years ago. If I recall, that time they were the Cavaliers of the White Helmet.. The outlawed secret lodge, P2, was an extremely dangerous organization with ramifications in all sectors of the government and industry, as well as in South America. General Emilio Massera, head of the Argentina junta, was a member of the P2. The P2 had strong referents in the USA. Often tragedy repeats itself as farce, and I think this is the case here. Saya and Sindoca come on as two wing nut Zeligs. Saya is already on trial for inciting racial hatred while Sidoca has been nailed for credit card fraud. Their right-wing party site is great for laughs. Their parallel police site has been obscured by authorities but is available in the English version at PeaceReporter. Licio Gelli denies knowing them and presumes that the autographed dedication may have been written on one of his books at a presentation. The police operation does stem from the investigation of Fabrizio Quattrocchi's death. However, Quattrocchi was never a member of this organization. Perhaps the most interesting matter is that some of their false intelligence was published in the Berlusconi yellow rag paper, Libero, several months ago. Once there it could easily jump the Atlantic. Some of their disinformation was given to police authorities but quickly dismissed after a short investigation.
