Pluses and Minuses

I would really like to write something insightful, but lack insights, so I will try to ask two small but, I hope, useful questions.

I note that the various "featured diaries" have a "+" prefixed to their titles. When the "+" is clicked it turns into a "-" (minus), which then toggles back to a "+" if reclicked. Also "something" seems to happen after clicking, but I can't decipher what exactly is occurring. What do these plus and minuses mean, i.e. what are they used for?

Is there any way to "gather up" a diary and the thread of comments into a single file "suitable for printing"? Jerome, Deanander, Soj, and other contributors frequently offer too much good content and attract too many useful comments for direct on-line absorbtion, and so it would be useful to be able to extract a diary and its thread. Admittedly, good browsers already permit this to a large degree and without much work, but the process is not as smooth as I would like.

Illumination from the elves would be appreciated.

Hi Hannah - when you toggle the "+ ", the piece is then saved into your "Hannah's page site", so you can read it later, store it for the information, etc. Hitting the "-" toggle, unsaves it. You can also subscribe to certain favored writers too, so you will get all of their articles saved into your "Hannah's page". Additionally, all of the comments you have made on others diaries and articles are noted in your page, and you can also see who has responded to your comments. I suggest exploring your "Hannah's page" site thoroughly, which you can only do when you log on...but there is a lot there...I'm still learning about what all the various preferences mean for the pages mean (like "nested", etc.)!! Check it out! The blog world...a whole new world, isn't it?

Thanks for the enlightenment. I seem to "log-in" automatically, but thanks to you I now understand the Home Page mechanism better. Presumably this sort of information is also "embedded" at the Scoop site but I didn't dig beyond their welcome page, and my faith in "personal intervention" has been rewarded.

Thanks again. I hope this has been useful for others too.

Your welcome...and I hope it helps others too. I recently found out a bit more about RSS feeds (though still have more to learn) when Soj posted a "how to" on RSS feeds here.

Anyone out there able to explain to me the meaning of the various display settings (nested, etc.), and what these refer to??

Well there are a couple of options.  The first is just to click "print" from your browser when you're reading a Diary you want to read offline.  Some browsers also let you "save" a page for offline viewing/reading as well.

Another option is to save an individual webpage on your computer, usually (F)ile then (S)ave Page As.  Then you can read it or forward it or put it on a disk to take home.

If you want to print a webpage without all the images, you can turn off image viewing in your browser.  This is done differently for each browser so I can't walk you through it step by step.

And last but not least, you can just click on (E)dit and (S)elect All then (E)dit and (C)opy and all the text will be highlighted, which you can copy to a text program like Word or Notepad.

Hope this helps even if I'm not an elf!

Night and day you can find me Flogging the Simian

Thanks for the suggestions, most of which I already use from time to time. Thanks also for not mentioning that it's not "ecologically correct" to print too much. As to not being an elf, today I am pretending to be a gnome (cf. diary), but even we "under the mountain" folk can't resist your elfin smile, on display at Flogging the Simian. By the way, how's the dating service going?
