Millenium Centre and the fountain

Taken during the summer, in Cardiff Bay. My favourite addition to the urban landscape of Cardiff in recent years.

and does the Prince of Wales agree with you?

I don't know actually.  He should do. It's very beautiful and quite ethical in how it was put together.

I live less than 10 minutes walk away and it's amazing how theatre culture has changed.  When I was little, going to the theatre was such a huge thing and out of reach for many.  Properly dressed up and making a night of it, for everyone.  But now, you can have your tea at home and leg it out in your jeans with your friends or family, it's the price of a couple of nights at the cinema so it has become accessible to many more people.

I think that building is happy to see me.

Slate roof

Gorgeously old and authentically beautiful.

Arts Centre

Just having fun with contrast and the starkness of this art centre which is in the middle of the grounds of the castle.

St. Donats Castle

Part of the oldest section of the castle, dating back a few hundred years.  Still solid and standing strong, they just don't make things to last these days...

Millenium Centre

This was built out of natural materials, all of which I believe is local/from Wales.  It's stunning inside too.

Red brick gargoyle

This is on a Welsh Assembly building but I haven't yet worked out what goes on in here, apart from the visitors centre bit inside.

I wish the fine art of gargoyle making could still earn one a living these days.  They certainly add interest to buildings.

I totally agree.  I love looking at the features on older buildings, even simple stuff like window sills and gutters can be beautifully ornate.  Now everything new is so plain and there is none of that great detail.

Funny you should mention that.  My friend, who is a gargoyle freak, has decided to become a "Gargoylist".  She's going to make gargoyles.  She bought a spread out in Arizona and is going to try her hand at it.  She has experience working in many media, so this should be interesting.  She carved herself a gargoyle from a piece of marble she got in Italy 12 years ago.  It's only about 5" high, she keeps it on her desk.  Then she made some out of cinnabar and she kept making these tiny things.  Finally, some guy who worked with her asked her to make a couple for his out out of copper.  That was her impetus.  I think he paid her something like $9K for each of them, and she made 6 total.  So, when she gets her site up, I'll be the first to tout it.

Overhanging roof of the Senedd

The Senedd is the new Welsh Assembly building, completed a few months ago and is a truly stunning piece of architecture, having already won a bunch of awards.

I love photos that play with edges, lines, light and dark. This is pretty much perfection.

It's such a beautiful structure to play with.  Oddly enough if you try to take a photo of the entire thing, it just doesn't work (partly because you can't get a clear shot of it without something making the background look messy). But if you focus on smaller aspects of it, it is so easy to photograph.

In these stones

A view from inside the Millenium Centre - the text reads in Welsh and English "in these stones horizons sing".  From the outside, the letters light up at night, from the inside, you can see out from the bar across the bay.

Penarth docks

I've no idea what this structure is but it's quite cute!

The Small Atlantean?  I'm reading this book (Brightonomicon) which had a place like that in the book.  When you go in, it's a bar, but it turns out to be much more than that later.
