Belarus Update: Police Arrest Hundreds of Protesters

As I'm sure you've heard, around 3am this morning the police moved into October Square in the capital of Minsk and rounded up hundreds of activists. There are reports that many of the activists were beaten by authorities, which is confirmed by the former Polish ambassador to Belarus, Mariusz Maszkiewicz.

Those occupying the square sat down to resist arrest but were taken away in seven police vehicles. There are also reports that journalists were ushered out of the square while the evacuation operation was taking place, although obviously some photos were taken, which you can see here.

Although days earlier, the Belarus KGB had described the opposition activists in October Square as "pathetic", they moved in this morning to arrest them. My guess is that opposition leader Milinkevich's call for thousands to join the rally tomorrow scared them. Tomorrow is a nationalist holiday in Belarus, which was likely to swell the crowd's numbers.

More photos of the arrest here although the website is under heavy attack. Previously, the police had been arresting anyone leaving or trying to enter October Square to keep the numbers down. There are also reports that yesterday the police attacked individuals who were trying to bring in portable toilets.

Click here (MP3) to hear an interview with a blogger from Belarus speak about the opposition.

Meanwhile Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says the police in Belarus did not break up the opposition rally. Why? Because the rally was an illegal means to protest election results, therefore it wasn't a rally at all and can't be broken up.

It seems like the activists arrested in October Square are being held in a special detention center.

I just saw this, and haven't noticed it being talked about elsewhere on ET...

From AP & Reuters via Aljazeera:

US, EU to 'punish' Lukashenko

The US and European Union are to impose sanctions and travel restrictions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and other officials after an election widely seen as rigged.

In Washington, Scott McClellan, the White House spokesman on Friday said the US planned to impose financial sanctions and travel restrictions against Belarus officials to show its opposition to the government's crackdown on protesters.

McClellan said: "We strongly condemn the actions by Belarussian security services."

Speaking on behalf of the EU in Brussels, Austrian Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik on Friday said the 25 EU leaders had decided to take steps against individuals "politically and administratively" responsible for electoral violations - including President Lukashenko.

Plassnik said EU leaders would invoke "restrictive measures", which will reportedly take effect in April, to express their opposition to the violation of "international electoral standards."

The same article also notes that Russia has accused the OSCE observer mission of bias and "instigation."

"Long before the elections, the OSCE mission led by the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) had declared that (the elections) would be illegitimate and it was pretty biased in its commentaries on their progress and results - let's be frank - thus playing an instigating role," Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said, adding that there was no cause to doubt the official results of the election.

Helsingin Sanomat is saying that the Belarus police has arrested opposition leader Alexander Kozulin. There are some reports of Alexander Milinkevich also having been arrested, but Reuters is saying that they have heard (from Milinkevich's people) that this is false.

You have a normal feeling for a moment, then it passes. --More--
