Cartoon Chaos, Chapter 2

Last time it was the Moslems we offended. Not satisfied, Norwegian daily Dagbladet decided to lash out against the jews, using the highly successfull cartoon method.

Jerusalem Post writes:

'In the cartoon, Olmert is likened to SS Major Amon Goeth, the infamous commandant of the Plaszow death camp outside of Krakow, Poland, who was convicted of mass murder in 1946 and hanged for his crimes.'

The New York Sun continues:

The cartoon, which caused little uproar in Norway when it was first printed, has become a hot topic of discussion after Ms. Shomrat filed a complaint with the Norwegian Press Trade Committee arguing that the cartoon exceeded the limits of free speech.

So, we've caused an uproar. We know that, are even painfully aware of it. But it was a newspaper, so not really our problem anyway, let them apologise. But what happened?

Our view:

  • Cartoon published. Since everyone skips past this page to go straight to the news anyway, noone noticed and it wasn't an issue.

  • Israeli ambassador pissed for some reason. Something about a cartoon.

  • Israeli ambassador threatens with lawsuits. First time we see the cartoon. Sure, we can see why she's not happy. Then we shrug and move on.

  • Israeli ambassador complaints to the press ombuds. Most Norwegians think 'why complain about this old cartoonists cartoons anyway, we all know he's way off...'

  • International media takes notice. Oh great.

And here we are. At the same time trying to broker a peace down there. Goodie...

Now, I think (know) this will be ignored in Norway, as bad news tend to be. The outside world will rage for a while, then they'll forget and we can move on.

So I now how Norway will respond, but what about the rest of the world? Will this ruin the reputation as a peace broker in the Mid-East?

People are offended much to easily.

I consider blowing up children rather more offensive than any cartoon can ever be.

Peak oil is not an energy crisis. It is a liquid fuel crisis.
