Acquittal is not enough - UK to send Y to Algeria

Y, an Algerian previously granted asylum in the UK, was acquitted of involvement in the "ricin" plot.

The British state still wants to get rid of Y. They believe things have improved in Algeria, so Y is no longer at risk of being tortured.

Today the Special Immigration Appeals Commission agreed there was no reason not to return Y to Algeria.

Interestingly one of the members of the jury that acquitted Y in the criminal trial is appearing on the BBC to support his staying.

Guardian online article extracts after the fold.

"Given the extensive evidence before Siac that Y would face a real risk of torture if deported to Algeria, today's decision can only be described as an affront to justice, and wrong," spokeswoman Nicola Duckworth said. In a highly unusual move, three of the jurors who acquitted Y in last year's ricin trial issued a statement through Amnesty condemning the Algerian's treatment by the British authorities. "We were three jurors on Y's criminal trial and after seven months listening carefully to the evidence and arguments from the prosecution and defence, we, as a jury, acquitted him of all charges and expected that on his release he could begin to rebuild his life in this country," the statement said. "As three ordinary members of the public, we have had our eyes opened to such an unfair and unjust sequence of events orchestrated by the authorities that we feel compelled to speak out. This is contrary to anything we thought could be possible in a democratic, free society,"

John Reid is a miserable wretch. And all his minions too.

John Reid has been Home secretary for a couple of months only. Before it was Clarke. They are both Blair's minions, and he's the miserable wretch.

Reid and Clarke were under Blair's thumb, just as was David Blunkett before that and Jack Straw before that. There is no doubt that the awful Home Office policies of the present government are down to Tony Blair and his determination never to be outflanked to the right in this area.

The Conservatives started this race to the bottom. Time was when Conservative Home Secretaries were supposed to restrain the blood lust of the hangers and floggers in their party, but that all changed during the Thatcher-Major years. They could not bring back hanging and flogging but they abandoned all attempts to do anything constructive at the Home Office. Michael Howard was a dreadfully reactionary Home Secretary and his Labour successors carried right on up the same road.

By now an old style Tory paternalist like Willie Whitelaw would be a great improvement as Home Secretary. I fear we will not see his like again, let alone a genuinely liberal, reforming Home Secretary like Roy Jenkins.
