Nottingham Beer Festival Meetup

by Drew J Jones Fri Sep 22nd, 2006 at 08:01:24 AM EST

Finally, the desk arrived shortly after the boardband was hooked up, so I set right to work putting it together.  IKEA certainly beats the hell out of Wal-Mart and Target as far as the ease of assembly is concerned -- to say nothing of price.

Alright, so Helen brought up the annual Nottingham Beer & Cider Festival, which runs from 19 October to 22 October, and I suggested that this might make for a good meetup opportunity.  My suggestion was seconded by Metatone, and Helen and Miguel have expressed an interest in attending.  That Saturday would be the 21st, which I'm guessing would be the best date, but, if you'd like to attend, feel free to make suggestions.

Full details of the event, including prices and times, can be found here.  The cost on Saturday is £2 for the whole day (10AM-11PM).  It doesn't look like it would be a terrible walk from the train station, but if we were to all head to the festival from my flat, it might be wise to hop on the bus, depending on how people feel about forty-five minute walks.  If you would be arriving from London, train tickets from St. Pancras are, depending on the time, £6 to £12.

The first thing to do, if we're going to have the meetup, is to establish who would be coming.  Thus far, unless anything has changed, the crowd would include Miguel, Metatone, Helen, and I.

How many people can take you up on that one?

At least two and maybe more, depending on the furniture situation.

I'm definitely up for it. It's a 2 hour journey from london and I can't imagine Ms Lazybones arriving much before midday so I'll see you in the fest.

I have a vague memory of saying we have to go to a pub as well in order to prove a point for Drew (and by extension Poemless) about the nature of Boddingtons.

You mean you can't get Boddington's at the fest?

Barbara and I are planning a 3-day weekend there. Hopefully the weather won't be too foul.

I doubt you can get Boddies there.  I think it's more a smaller brewers' scene, but I could be wrong.  As always, Helen is the person to ask.

As far as the weather is concerned, I wouldn't worry, because a year's worth of rain is being dumped on Nottm today.  It does keep the temperatures down, though.

Boddingtons?  I don't remember that.  I thought you were going to prove to me that Olde Trip wasn't so great and that my terrible experience with Abbot was a fluke.

As a pub environment the Olde Trip ios possibly okay (I've never been there), but the beer menu wasn't too great.

I have to get you to Cambridge to prove that Greene King beers aren't awful. My experience is that they are served in a dreadful condition nearly everywhere, but that's a cellar-management issue. the vbeer itself is perfectly okay.

I'd be shocked and stunned if boddies was served at a beer fest. It's nitrokeg and as such cannot be described as real ale.

I talked to my local publican about the Greene King and he absolutely confirms your premise, says he doesn't like messing with it himself, and was stunned that I (as an ignorant American) knew about it. Tipped the hat to you on that one.

The beer menu is generally shit at H&H, aside from Olde Trip, which I, obviously, enjoyed.  The other beers are terrible, so, when they run out of Olde Trip, I usually go for either Guinness or Newcastle.

Have you been to 'The Lincolnshire Poacher' yet? It's a Batemans house on the Mansfield Rd, about halfway up the hill as you go out from the town centre.

They have a reasonable variety of beers as I recall and it's a mellow sort of place.

One day the internet will have some kind of virtual tase technology built in.  Until then, I just take your word for it. :)

Speaking of beer, Matthew brought home "pumpkin ale" last night.  I'm mildly terrified.

I'll give it a go and report back.

I had a raspberry beer at a great brewery in Oregon once that was actually superb.  Didn't taste like raspberries, just had the suggestion of them.

ah, cherry and raspberry beer are fabulous. Peach is interesting. Banana beer works as well tho' I have to say it's a taste I've never acquired. I've heard good things about cocount too, but I can't imagine it in anything other than a stout.

But strawberry just doesn't work.
