The Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security are quietly pushing for a set of crazy new rules. All travelers in the U.S. will be required to get government-issued credentials and official clearance before every flight, both within the United States as well as internationally.

http://www.10zenmonkeys.com/2007/10/22/prior-permission-from-government-to-be-required-for-each-flig ht/

And Monday we received a new political action alert from Edward Hasbrouk, The Practical Nomad blogger who's been fighting the plan (and who testified about it at a TSA hearing). "The international Advance Passenger Information System rules were published, as 'final' effective February 19,2008, with no further opportunity for public comment even on the changes from the original proposal."

---------------------------------------------

"The Department of Homeland Security can now evade debate on the similar elements of their Secure Flight proposal by claiming that it's needed to 'harmonize' the domestic and international travel restrictions -- as though travel within America was tantamount to and subject to the same government restrictions and controls as crossing international borders."

There will be a skillfully managed push to also "harmonize" European data collection and transfer requirements, in order to continue to provide European access to the American air travel market--dontcha know. And the EU will bitch a bit, then fold.

"The Secure Flight proposal also includes new and odious requirements that travelers display their government-issued credentials -- not to government agents, but to airline personnel (staff or contractors), whenever the Department of Homeland Security orders the airline to demand them... " That alone will create a huge potential for abuse. "The proposed Secure Flight rules would leave travelers hopelessly at the mercy of any identity thief who claims to be an airline contractor (subcontractor, sub-subcontractor, etc.) demanding 'Your papers, please!' anywhere in an airport."

That personal information, including all data history on your docs, hotel reservations, length of stay, itinerary, books carried, cell phone numbers, contacts,  and anything else supplied will, after the information is transferred to the "authorities", remain the property of the airline, and need not be deleted or returned. So there's the carrot that will entice their agreement to this travesty. What a bonanza of marketing data!! Europe will not escape this.

These new rules must be very popular with the American tourist industry.

I told Bush; don't play chess with the freakin' Russians.

It is good to do security business these days...

By the way, Japan is starting fingerprinting of visitors next month.

Well, I know I keep saying it, but until America regains its sanity, I really really don't wanna go there.

You speak as if this were a disease- like a case of the flu, that the United States may get over. I see the disease spreading. After living in ten countries in thirty years, I find that it seems to follow me like the plague.

Come gather round people, wherever you roam,
And admit that the waters around you have grown,
And accept it that soon you'll be drenched to the bone!
For the times, they are a-changing.

Bod Dylan

At least we know who to blame now.

Out of respect for Bob Dylan, here are the complete lyrics. I blew the memory trip.

Come gather round people
Wherever you roam
And admit that the waters
Around you have grown
And accept it that soon
You'll be drenched to the bone
If your time to you is worth savin'
Then you better start swimming
Or you'll sink like a stone
For the times they are a changin

Come writers and critics
who prophesize with your pen
Keep your eyes open
The chance won't come again
Watch what you say
For the wheel's still in spin
And there ain't tellin' who that it's naming
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they are a changin

Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he who gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
The battle outside it is raging
It'll rattle your windows
and shake down your walls
For the times they are a changin

Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticise
What you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly aging
Get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a changin

Smitty and I did this one at the Jacksonville Naval Station, Mayport, Florida during the Viet Nam war, and spent the night in the Mayport jail. Good memory.

Enough security checks - Aftenposten.no
At least one pilot in airline Widerøe has opted for early retirement rather than continue to endure the security routines at Norwegian airports.

Is there any confirmation of this from other sources?

Good question- I will look further. I accepted the monkey's story because I remember reading about the thing a while ago, and I assumed it was just too absurd to pass--I wrote it off. I think it was in Raw Story originally.
