Open Source Social Democracy

by PESmanifesto2009
Tue Oct 30th, 2007 at 07:08:59 AM EST

The PES has a big ambition: for all Europe's socialist, social democratic and labour parties to go into the 2009 European elections united around a common progressive manifesto. A manifesto that members of our national parties - and progressive people across Europe - have shaped through open discussion and debate. A manifesto that gives a clear choice between left and right.

http://manifesto2009.pes.org is the consultation website - there is every opportunity to post articles, comment, rate, and share your favourite ideas. It's really interactive - and really waiting for you to join in.

[editor's note, by Migeru] Video moved below the fold to save space on the Front Page.

This diary will be PES' spot on European Tribune. I am the editor of http://www.manifesto2009.pes.org and really like your community and the idea behind it. Through this diary, and hopefully by encountering Eurotrib users on our site as well, I am looking forward get to know you and your opinions during the next months.

Greetings from rainy Brussels,

Rikke

Brilliant - I was a bit puzzled that I couldn't add an embedded YouTube URL, I'll check the manual for next time.

You can also reply to a comment directly rather than to the main diary, and if you have set the comment display options appropriately, comments are displayed threaded and nested.

Welcome to European Tribune, Rikke!

Your initiative meets an expectation that has been expressed several times on ET: we have often said the political parties, especially the left, should adopt a Europe-wide approach for the main political, economic and social issues. This is particularly relevant for the European elections campaign. Thanks for establishing the link with PES manifesto.

Even if I think we should encourage every ET diarist/user/lurker to contribute to your project, I also think we could better exploit the collective added-value we have been able to develop through this community by working together to prepare collective ET contributions on some issues we have been debating on ET (and some more).

I think it would be worth having a diary to identify the themes/issues about which we would like to make an ET contribution and to list who would like to work on them.

Thanks, Melanchthon! Here in the PES campaign office we are very excited about the new project as well.

The idea of a specific ET contribution sounds very interesting, please keep me updated on this. If you want more details about our four themes I suggest that you take a look at the consultation's discussion papers: http://www.manifesto2009.pes.org/en/documents/ They are available in several languages.

BTW - right now it is highly important for us to spread the word about the consultation and reach progressive communities all over Europe - so if any Eurotrip users know people with an interest in our initiative, it would be great if you would let them know.

OK, we'll spread the word.

I have a question: is it possible to be a PSE activist without being a member of a national party? Because I would certainly consider joining a European Socialist Party, but I don't want to join the French Socialist Party as it is today...

Having to join the UK Labour Party is also a non-starter.

It seems like at least nanne should be able to write articles and not just comments over at the PES manifesto site, and so he can cross-post ET content.

Maybe I should. But I can't. I'm not a PES activist either and I am not planning to join the SPD or PvdA.

I do have communication lines :-) but so do you and colman, I think?

So I misinterpreted Rikke's note on the manifesto site...

Will a PES member step out of the closet, please?

It would be interesting to write out the findings from socratic biofuels, perhaps after a bit more discussion. I presume that Rikke will be willing to crosspost.

If by "findings from Socratic Biofuels" you mean this, you're too generous.

Well... I'm optimistic that it can be made a bit more precise.

Hi Nanne and others,

Sorry for the late reply, but I've been running around to meetings all day. Busy day at the PES, we're trying to report on the recent SPD congress in Hamburg - there will be some videos up tomorrow. I'll crosspost them here when they're on YouTube.

I've just talked to the campaign group and we all agree that we would be very happy to receive your contributions. If you have any posts for the site, you can send them to me and I'll crosspost. You'll find my e-mail in my user profile.

One of you has already been very active in discussing biofuels and if you want to do a new entry on this, describing your view, I think it would be a great idea.

Just to fill in for anyone who would otherwise not know and might be afraid to ask:

Party of European Socialists - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Party of European Socialists (PES) is a European political party comprising 33 national parties. Its members are social democratic, socialist and labour parties from every EU state and Norway.

The party forms the Socialist Group in the European Parliament which is currently the second largest force in Parliament, it was dominant prior to the EPP-ED victory in 1999. The parliamentary group is led by Martin Schulz and the political party is led by Poul Nyrup Rasmussen. He was re-elected at the 2006 PES Congress in Porto, Portugal (8th December 2006) for a term lasting until June, 2009.

PES was founded in 1992 in The Hague to succeed the Confederation of Socialist Parties of the European Community (founded in 1980). It is an associated organisation of the Socialist International. Ecosy is the youth organisation of PES. The parliamentary group has existed since 1953.

Sure, you can also read more about PES at http://www.pes.org/content/view/42/69/lang,en/ and view the member parties here: http://www.pes.org/content/view/11/48/lang,en/ - actually PS Switzerland is also a member!
