US Meet-Up?

(Having been dared .....)

It has been suggested having an ET Meet-Up in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This diary is posted to answer three questions:

  1.  Is there enough interest to have a Meet-Up in Albuquerque?

  2.  When?

  3.  What should we do?

I'm going to take a 'page' from Fran and set this diary up such that there are three sections devoted to the three questions.

If you would be interested in attending but need special travel arrangements -- such as a charter flight from Europe (hint, hint) -- this is the place.

I would love to come, with the "if circumstances allow" caveat.  Meaning, could I crash on your couch? ;)  Also, if other midwesterners are interested, we could carpool.  Roadtrip!  Can't you just see me, redstar, MfM & Mary B in the same car?! lol...

Crashing on our couch wouldn't help, we don't live in Albuquerque.

Well, maybe we should have this where you live? :)

Depending on when this takes place, I might actually be able to come along, since I may actually have a reason to come out to Albuquerque for job-related issues.  I haven't been out West in about a decade either, so that'd be fun.

What month and dates would be most convenient for you?

I believe PP will not be back in NM until April so that may be the earliest we should think about having this.

That means there would be at least 3 people at this thing.  ;-)

If Page won't be back until April, I'd say let's shoot for next summer.  In fact, maybe around the time (before or after) of the Netroots Nation thing, so if anyone is going to that, they'll only have to make one trip to the southwest.  Piggyback on the convention?  (I habe no intention of going, but I assume Page, MaryB & Jerome are...)

Netroots Nation will be held July 17-20 in Austin, Texas.

(thanks and a hat tip to Wife of Bath for the info.)

Albuquerque is about 700 miles from Austin so its one long days drive or another plane trip.

To be fair, just getting from on place to another in NM often requires "one long days drive."  :)

Just trying to think of the needs of others...  Forgive me.

I think getting from one place to another anywhere in the Southwest requires one long day's drive.

If you have the meet-up in Austin around July 17-20, I will be there.

I am planning a long overdue trip out there anyway, and that time period happens to work well for me.  Did not know Netroots Nation was happening at the same time, but sounds like another good reason (besides the migas at Julio's, the frozen margaritas at Trudy's, and salsa dancing at Oasis above Lake Travis, of course.)

Having said that, Albuquerque retains a mystical hold on me from a day and a night I spent there on a road-trip in college, and I have always wanted to visit the High Church of Complexitology in Santa Fe.

But Austin would be a near sure thing for me; Albuquerque would be harder to swing.

Besides Wife of Bath, are there any other EuroTribbers living in central Texas?

I have no objections to having the ET Meet-Up there, then.

Whether we (Elaine & I) could make it is unknown.

Austin would be great, too.  I've never visited, but I've heard it's a fantastic town.

If we are going to get together why not do something in addition to sitting around and talking?

We could:

  1.  Write a devastating critique of Neo-Liberalism
  2.  Write a Leftist Economic Manifesto
  3.  Have a panel (or more) on Economics, EU/US relations, economic and political effects of Global Warming
  4.  Establish the US side of the ET Think Lab
  5.  Plan the overthrow of Predatory Capitalism
  6.  Have an ET "Conference" with anybody having the chance to present anything they want: films, music, art, lectures, poster boards, & etc. for ... 30 minutes?  .... an hour?

There is a chance of getting audio and visual recording equipment at a meeting site.  This opens up the potential to broadcast, in some way, the public side of  deliberations, presentations, etc.

Since Santa Fe is 40 minutes from Albuquerque there is a chance we could get a speaker from the Santa Fe Institute, for those of us fascinated by Complexity Theory.

Maybe have a 'keynote' speech by [who?]

What else?

What should we do?  Well, I prefer Santa Fe or Taos to Albuquerque.  Then again, I don't think I've ever been to Albuquerque...  But if any Europeans show up, I think Santa Fe or Taos would be a very great experience for them.

Mostly I'd just come to see people, so I don't care what we'd do...

Anyway, if someone builds this, I will come.

Would love to come! Probably not, though. Sorry.

hmm, ponder, ponder

Albuquerque has the only airport in New Mexico with a large ('ish') number of daily commercial flights.

We seem to be approaching a consensus it would be best to hold the Meet-Up sometime during the Netroots Nation meeting, July 17-20 in Austin, Texas.

Perhaps Wife of Bath could suggest a location within walking distance of the convention site?

or its environs?

the date of my relocation approacheth [and I will spare y'all the various levels of bureaucratic insanity surrounding what should be a simple enough move].  after I get to BC I will be a stranger in the area with few friends and contacts, so if there are any ETistas in the Vic/Van region I will probably be grateful for any social invitations/introductions I can get, come mid-Jan.

what a love-er-ly time to be selling a house in the US.

we are definitely not having fun yet.
