Calling all article writers...help!!

by whataboutbob Wed Feb 21st, 2007 at 11:13:45 AM EST

Hell Euro Trib community!

It seems we are going through a bit of a transition around here at the moment, about which Jerome will elaborate with you about within the next few days. But the issue involves a number of our usual front page and diary writers being collectively involved in other ways...

So ...this is a request...even a plea...for any of you who are so inclined to please feel encouraged to submit an article, or a photojournal, or anything of this sort. Heck, if enough of us write one article a week, we will be just fine (and I will contribute too). And just to be clear...the quality of articles that have been submitted in recent months have been fantastic...it more about quantity at the moment. THANKS and cheers!

I admit that I spend so much time writing on a computer these days, that it is a bit difficult for me to feel like I have much to offer to ET. BUT...I will try to come up with some stuff...there definitely is a lot to talk about! Look forward to hearing from you too!

Is 5+ diaries per day over the last 9 days not good enough?

That's a very creative use of numbers... Take out days 8&9 out, and the diaries written by FPers, and you're down to less than 3 diaries a day, which is not enough when there's nothing on the front page!

There are 7 diaries by front-pagers out of the last 50, but okay, let's take them out. That gives you 4- diaries per day over the past 9 days. Plus the salon and open thread that's 6- stories per day. If you want the 10 stories on the front page to spend a day there you need 4 stories/diaries by front pagers each day, other than the salon and open thread.

But you have the traffic you have. You still did not answer my question... why is 5 diaries per day not good enough? What turnover do you want for the front page?

the average is fine. It's just that there was a lull in diaries at the same time as none of the FPers were around, so not much new content throughout the day. Not a big problem in the larger scheme of things, I suppose.

One thing the diaries are good for is to bring more variety of topics. Sometimes I feel like a broken record.

There is also a lull in site traffic on Saturdays. "taking out days 8 and 9" means  averaging from Snday to Monday - lower average because of the seasonal effect of the weeend. But if you look at the site traffic this week has been normal for the month and so presumably we're on trand for the year, which is up.

Heh heh, you sound like Jerome debunking writing with stats and charts.

By the way,

if you look at the site traffic

where is this possible?

Maybe I've spent too much time reading the Dear Leader.

There is a link to the sitemeter page for ET at the bottom-right of the page.

Maybe I should have done some numbers, Jerome, but without any guideline about optimum content, I never realized I was slacking.  Sorry for my part.

feel the width.

Considering all the hard work we peasants have put in over the last year or so, I feel we are inadequately consulted.

Nothing much to consult on at the moment - we're mostly arranging the server move.

OK - so the only announcement is "please, more diaries"?

Oh come off it. It's not like this wasn't mentioned and/or discussed previously. I seem to remember you having a long wish list of features, none of which can be implemented until we have control of the system.

And it's not as if I haven't mentioned in threads recently that I was working on it.

There's nothing to consult on until we have the power to make changes: even Jérôme doesn't really have effective control over the site at the moment. So that's the first order of business.

Don't get shirty. I admit to being busy recently and thus I may have missed certain information.

But I assumed that you already had control of the server and that you were working on it. I may be alone in this assumption, in which case I apologize.

If I am not alone, then my original point stands.

Was in the works for 2 days, but my CD-ROMS have played up against me. Final attempt tomorrow. And please don't get too many hopes up on an Africa photo diary. This one was being chiseled at before I left.

And me, slowly talking myself into doing one a month - and who can't read all comments anyway !?!
by balbuz on Wed Feb 21st, 2007 at 01:11:47 PM EST
uhh ohh "transition.... elaborate..."  Can members be fired? I´m nervous enough about Iran.

I was happy to keep up with the current load and most comments, but your diary inspired one that has become a ...... kaboom!

Presumably a gnome is a technical admin and a FPer is someone who can write on the front page. Those two roles could be separate, but they are not.

Can someone walk me through the procedure to put photos in the diary.  I promised one about a motorcycle trip across the mountain-west some months back and haven't delivered yet.  I'm a bit of a technophobe I guess, but I would like to help out if I can.

Open a new tab, Ctrl-T on Mozilla-like browsers. Go to http://imageshack.us/

Click [Browse], choose an image on your hard disk.
Eventually leave the "Resize image" option on.
Click [Host it!]. Wait for the answer.

Paste the code near [Hotlink for Websites], only keep the part which is something like  <img src=http://whatever.jpg border=0/>
Do [Preview], you should get this :

Jeez Louise...I seemed to have caused some anxiety...or ruffled feathers, I'm not sure which. Very sorry about that. But really, I have requested/encouraged more articles before, and so was just asking again, I didn't mean to make it sound som ominous. Anyway, blame me...I was being a unilateral American...but it was in the spirit of encouragement, honest.
