Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the European Union, and perhaps it is a good opportunity to pause and reflect on this historical moment…and to reflect on where we go next. What do you think, how shall the EU proceed from here? And if the is a , what should it focus on?

Here are some articles that Fran posted in this morning’s European Salon that discuss various aspects of this anniversary:

Text of the Berlin Declaration to Mark 50 Years of the EU
EU Leaders Adopt 50th Anniversary Berlin Declaration
Russia is Europe's natural ally – by Vladimir Putin
Blair 'haunted' on EU anniversary

Any comments, about any of these topics (or other EU related discussions), are welcomed...

I will kick off the discussion by saying...that it has been a noble experiment, and for the most part has been quite successful. Of course, there are also notable challenges...like the Balken conflicts.

The one thing I would like to see more of is that the EU be more responsive to the people and the people's needs...which means being less elite and more representative of the people (somehow)...

I've not enough time to post a long comment right now, but I think we should also link to recent debates on ET:

So what's the EU good for?

The next fifty years: external affairs.

Thinking of Putin, can someone say what is the position of Ségo, Bayrou, Sarko, Le Pen on (relations with) Russia?
