Olympic Logo Causes Fits

by Londonbear

On Monday the organising committee for the 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics unveiled the official logo for the games. For the first time, the same logo is to be used for both sets of games, emphasising the inclusive nature of the bid.

It comes in a variety of colours and is designed to appeal to young people with its hip-hop or graffitti style. The numbers form an outline vaguely similar to the map of Greater London but it is also intended to be used extensively in moving form, where the changing colours and patterns make it a little less strange. That did not stop controversy over the design which appears to have not that many fans.

Unfortunately, one section of the video promotion featuring it has had to be pulled after it induced epileptic fits in some people.

Of the BBC readers' logos someone linked to, I liked these 'serious' alternatives:

How could I not like this one:

As for fun versions:

Here's my theory: the designers created an extremely cool and thought-provoking logo that would have impressed the pants off everyone, but before they had a chance to submit it to the committee, someone accidentally dropped it on the floor. A bit of glue (which the designers might or might not have inhaled during the process) and voilá - London 2012!

Waffen SS wants their logo back.

In London today, remaining members of the Waffen SS sued the 2012 London Olympics committee for copyright infringement.

This is what happens when ad agencies believe their own bullshit. It's happening everywhere.

I still remember the hub-bub when the then-recently formed/renamed/merged/whatever Merita Bank paid x millions of Finnish marks for their logo in the mid-90s. Of course, a couple of years later it merged into Nordea, and the überexpensive logo went bye-bye. Presumably Nordea's logo also caused bucketloads of cash.
Heck, the most I received for one of my logo designs was a few grand. Clearly I don't have the right connections.

You don't! Simonetta Carbonera got 60,000 (as I recall) for coming up with the brandword 'Solo'. I also had an old friend working as Presentations Manager at the Wolff Olins agency that did Merita. I got to hear about some of the nice perks they all got for that one. The total was around 4 mill mummonmarkkalla, I think.

Didn't know you were a designer. Got a website? I'm in the business, as you probably know.

12,500 per letter?!? Insanity, I say!

I did some web and graphics design on the side for a while (though I wasn't necessarily particularly good at it ;-) while I was studying. Only thing I got in terms of a website at the moment is a half-finished site mostly for testing stuff.

The website is real nice too; functional and easy to navigate, and not flashy for the sake of being flashy, like some websites...

The KISS principle, of course. We started out thinking about what an agency for consumers intead of sellers might do for a living :-)

In fact, the number was so shocking I lost my ability to do basic arithmetics. 15,000/letter would be the correct number. Good thing I'm not in charge of calculating satellite trajectories at ESA.

That was in mummonmarkka, not € - but still.

I met the lady a few times, and she is indeed smart. Former Memphis collaborator, now living in Germany. But we fell out when I realised she didn't quite understand Finland.

And as I saw on a friend's blog yesterday, it seems that somebody on a blog somewhere has animated the logo to make it clear to those who can't quite see it....
