Tokyo/Kyoto Meet-up: February 8-9

Any EuroTribbers in Japan these days interested in getting together for a meet-up in early February?

I'll be in Tokyo over winter break from January 28 to February 14, and while planning the trip, I thought it would be worth a shot to see if anyone in Nihon would be up for going to an izakaya or somewhere to chat over nabe, unagi, sukiyaki and/or a few cups of nihonshu.

After February 3, I'm pretty open on possible dates, but since I figured a Friday and/or Saturday would be most likely to work for most people, I'm throwing out February 8-9 as a first suggestion.

(If Kansai happens to be easier for anyone, I hope to go to Kyoto/Nara for a few days, too, so maybe a meet-up there might work as well.)

I know it's a long-shot, but I'm holding a candle out for EuroTrib's first Asian meet-up to happen some time in 2008!

for you, isn't it.  If it were in August, we could all get a wagon on the TranSiberian in June and meet you in Shanghai.

I hope das monde, Zwackus and others make it and you have a good time, blogging included.

It does!

(I've actually been thinking of realizing my longtime dream of taking the Trans-Siberian train to China next summer..)

Hm. Think they'd have facilities for a three-month old on board?

Hmmmmmmm... Depends on what he/she might need. Boiled water for hygienic stuff? Lots, from the samovars (do they still have samovars?) Place to change diaper? You can always use the not-so-comfortable bed. Food? Well, most kids that age have their own foodstuff with them, traveling with their mother. :-)

isn't that a rather long trip for a 3 month old?  And new mom?

we could all get a wagon on the TranSiberian in June and meet you in Shanghai.

Or Beijing, if you make it here in time for Ba-Ba-Ba (]200]8-8-8).

And even if we cannot watch any of the events, there are at least two reasons why Beijing might be more interesting than Shanghai:

  • there are for more historical and cultural things to see and do there than in Shanghai

  • seeing Beijing, the city, in the upheaval of these historic Olympics, will be a once in a lifetime experience for sure.

Not to mention that Beijing is (slightly) less sweltering than Shanghai in the summer.

That would be great.  The 9th would probably be better for me, as I'm a couple hours out and making anything on Friday is a bit of a challenge, but it would be possible if that works better for everyone else.

Whereabouts in Tokyo were you thinking?  I know Ikebukuro and Shibuya the best, although I must admit my handle on ramen-ya, European beer pubs, and western restaurants is better than that of izakaya.  My little town has enough good Japanese food for me, and when I go to Tokyo I usually splurge on stuff I can't get at home.

fantastic.  two's company, and counts as a meet-up of sorts in my book.  also, if lodging over night rather than going back home the same day would be more convenient, i may have an easy -- and costless -- solution (which may work for das monde as well, in case we can persuade him to come out all the way to Tokyo for the weekend.)  just need to check with a friend of mine in tokyo.
