Thanks, I needed that.

I'm thinking - or rather, I'm aimlessly hanging around - about how to spend the holidays I'm going to be taking in the next few weeks for lack of a right to do anything at work.

You could volunteer for the UN Electoral Assistance Division. I believe there will be a pretty rigged election upcoming in the next few weeks that will probably need assistance. I'm sure they'd welcome a Frenchman with open arms

Speaking of which, isn't that election coming up, like, now or something?

Ohio's not the crappiest place on earth.

Panhandle of Florida though.  Would be paradise if it wasn't for all Floridians, and not the nice kind that moved from someplace else.  The kind that have been eating alligator so long it's driven them a little bit crazy :)

The old farm.

I went with my mother to see the old farmstead where she grew up.

A very nice Amish family own it now, and they were interested in seeing pictures of what the old farm looked like.

I had never seen the farm before, so it was different because I could put a picture to all these things that my mother has told me about the farm.

Always enjoyed that kind of thing.  Went driving all over Georgia seeing where the family had come up.  The little shop they sold groceries and moonshine out of during the Depression is still there, although it's been abandoned for years and years.  Some of the farms are still there, although I don't think it's sharecropping anymore.

Low energy day. As a result of the Julie Bindel thing I posted about last night, I got caught up in a discussion about "feminism" on a lesbian discussion board. Yes I know I have controversial views about feminism but I still feel that there are useful discussions to be had across the viewpoint divide.

But ET has spoiled me, I'm really not used to making a case in front of people who can't/won't follow an argument, simply disagree with your understanding of a historical narrative without necessarily giving a credible alternative view cos it's their opinion and they're entitled to it and generally aren't willing to debate honestly.

It didn't help that there was another TG floating through the discussion who was, imo, trying to win respect by agreeing with the Bindelistas. I was having to restrain myself from pointing out that you don't get respect by demonstrating you have none for yourself. No, cos that would make me an angry trans and all feminists know that trans people are always angry. Not that being on the receiving end of endless bigotry from feminists has anything to do with it at all.

So I reviewed the comments this morning and I just felt tired. Apparently somebody being a bigot and  pointing out that that somebody is a bigot is morally identical in feminist world. So.....

So far it's cost us something of the order of €1,500 in tax increases. I'm sure that total will go up. Now, we should never have been paying so little tax - they cut too much in their obesience to free market dogma - but it's still depressing.

What's to be said?

A plan to kill Roberto Saviano and his police escort before the end of the year has been confirmed by authorities. La Repubblica has linked the gangland rumours to the confessions of Oreste Spagnuolo one of the killers of the Castelvolturno massacre in which six Africans were slaughtered as well as an Italian police informant. The Casalese band had been shopping for detonators to raise the level of conflict against the state.

The possible plan to use explosives for Camorra terror operations recalls the mafia war against the state by Totò Riina and Bernardo Provenzano in the early 90's with bombings in Florence, Rome and Palermo.

The purpose of that war was to force the state to negotiate with the mafia.

It may now have come full circle after 15 years of silent mafia. If it won't be Saviano, the message is clear. The intention is more bombs or massacres.

On one hand we have the Minister of Interior blabbering about a "gang war" while the Minister of Interior invents a "civil war" (something that he as a leghista often menaced). After the "Operation Spartacus" trials with its definitive sentence that confirmed all the heavy life imprisonment sentences against the Camorra leadership, the Camorra has reacted by defying the state as the mafia did in the late 80's, early 90's.

Perhaps, like the Sicilian Mafia at the time, the Camorra has a list of grievances that they want to negotiate with whoever has the power and the will to come to terms with them, perhaps by passing laws that blunt police and judiciary powers to investigate and repress crime. Perhaps the Camorra has lost its patience.

This is of course only my opinion.

An interesting factotum, given the narrative, "Sustainable Debt Peonage." One may or may not subscribe to the narrative.

World Bank governance | Guardian | 13 Oct 2008

The US is to lose its power to appoint the president of the World Bank after the UK's development secretary, Douglas Alexander, brokered a deal to throw open the post to candidates from any country.

Backed by European governments and developing countries, Alexander overcame resistance from the US and Japan to secure a reform he described last night as "a significant step forward".

Washington has had the right to hand-pick the president of the World Bank since the institution was founded after the second world war, with Europe choosing the managing director of the International Monetary Fund.

Alexander is certainly fortunate to be able to negotiate World Bank procedure, following the very strange performances of presidents Robert Zoellick and The Wolfowitz, "a guy who combed his hair with his own spittle" (cometman) and did not darn his socks but surely guaranteed his lover's income.

But to paraphrase McCain oppo-strat (originally coined by Anna Quinlan, doyen columnist at the Washington Post), Who is Douglas Alexander? Superficial answer: tail-end of the Boomer cohort and an advocate for international development aid (IDA, searchable) which is one very broad class of a global NGO industry. Alexander is concerned about improving poverty metrics worldwide. So is Mr Obama.

Solved: Microsoft.WindowsSecurityCenter.AntiVirusOverride - Tech Support Guy Forums
These are just warnings that the Security Center alerts that would normally warn you if your anti-virus and firewall have been turned off or disabled for any reason, have been unchecked so that they do not warn you.

If you chose not to be alerted and turned those things off in the Security Center intentionally, then you can have SpyBot put these on Ignore.
Otherwise, something or someone has changed those settings and that should be investigated further.

You will find them under the Security Center in the Control Panel.
On the left-hand side, you will see five options.
Click on the last one "Change The Way Security Center Alerts Me" and you will find three choices there.
If there are no check marks in the boxes, that means that the alerts have been turned off.

metavision, do you read your email on the web (in your browser), or with some email application that downloads it to your machine? If the former, the simplest solution would be to open a new email address -- the old one will remain known to spambots anyway.

I read it on the web and yes, I have several addresses available that I am trying to reorganize, but it is not easy to change an ´identity´ built over 13 years for many different functions, just because some __ fing __ miscreant ___ wants to cause heck.  I doubt they think they can sell ´electronic products´ in this way.

I just hope that it has caused no inconvenience to anyone, but there are people and sources I will never reach again, or may consider me spam.

to me it does look more like a trawl for addresses, thats my first instinct at looking through the email headers on the recieved mail that your account sent me.

I'm here, Frank!  If I received your email it has been wiped and I don't want to infect anyone's either, but scan your machine also.

If you're running out of time, can you give me some dates here first, please?

Just posted it below you.  Really can't ask for a better story when McCain is trying to continue hammering the Bill Ayers non-issue.

Just as McCain is promising to attack Obama on Ayers in tomorrow night's debate, the You Can't Make This Shit Up Department delivers the goods:

HuffPo | McCain Transition Chief Aided Saddam In Lobbying Effort:

William Timmons, the Washington lobbyist who John McCain has named to head his presidential transition team, aided an influence effort on behalf of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to ease international sanctions against his regime.

The two lobbyists who Timmons worked closely with over a five year period on the lobbying campaign later either pleaded guilty to or were convicted of federal criminal charges that they had acted as unregistered agents of Saddam Hussein's government.

During the same period beginning in 1992, Timmons worked closely with the two lobbyists, Samir Vincent and Tongsun Park, on a previously unreported prospective deal with the Iraqis in which they hoped to be awarded a contract to purchase and resell Iraqi oil. Timmons, Vincent, and Park stood to share at least $45 million if the business deal went through.

Actually the lack of rivets on the boiler and particularly the firebox does look a teeny weeeny bit like it's a wooden mock up.

You'd be very good at a (extended) family game we used to play at Xmas - 'Murder'.

You take as many playing cards as there are players, ensuring the Ace of Spades and the Jack of Diamonds are among them. Everyone takes a card, looks at it privately and returns the card face down. The Jack is the detective and reveals him/herself immediately. No-one know who got the Ace - the Murderer.

The detective stays in one lighted room and waits. Everyone else leaves into the darkened house. The Murderer selects a victim at a time and place of choice, placing the hands gently around the neck of the victim. The victim must count 5 seconds before screaming. The murderer has time to change their position in the dark. Everyone else must freeze immediately they hear the scream and stay in position until interviewed by the detective, who, upon hearing the scream, starts through the house putting on all the lights.

Interviewees must all answer questions truthfully. Only the murderer can lie. Then everyone retires to the `police station' for further refreshments and the detectives findings. The detective only has two tries at naming the Murderer who also must answer truthfully to a direct accusation.

In practice, of course, Aunt Lil screams immediately she is touched on the neck and may also pee herself if she's had one too many Double-Diamonds again. Cousin Brian, in his rush to escape the crime scene treads on the cat's tail and knocks over the flower stand. And Auntie Phil shouts "Bugger" from the stairs.

But all is well when mother cracks open the Green Chartreuse and we repay Lil for spoiling the game with the old fart cushion gambit as she flops into her usual easy chair. Fun times...

Where was that ??

The 2800s were nice but even now, thanks to Dai Woodham, they're pretty common. The 2-8-0 (that's 1-4-0 for DoDo) everybody wishes one of which had been saved was the 4700 class.

Birmingham Moor St station. I didn't get to go up the platform to take a close look so I don't know if it is the real thing or not.  It looked convincing to me but I wouldn't have thought to study the rivets too closely.

Hey, you didn't allow me to find it :-) (Though with the palm tree, I would have looked for it in Southern Wales or Cornwall...)

Methinks there are rivets on the smokebox, while I wouldn't be surprised at welding on a newer loco. According to Wikipedia, it's real, GWR 2884 class #2885.

A coupla days ago Plutonium Page (dKos front pager) came here and announced a nameless fear. She didn't explain herself for reasons best known to her so it was difficult to get a handle on it.

I think tonight she explained herself.

All I can say is....I hope not. I wish I could be more certain.

Drew and I have been talking about this for months.

My odds on Obama surviving the next 4 years are 50/50.  Security or not, if the assassin is willing to die, has basic marksmanship, and isn't a total idiot it is almost impossible to keep them from succeeding.

Och nu den svenska kocken bakar en Alaskan älg jägare. Bonk! Bonk! Bonk!

Nah.  No more than a .001% chance of Obama being assassinated.  Not impossible, but highly unlikely.  You lived through the '60s, so I imagine it strikes you as the same scary shit that went on then, but the bubble presidents live in today is worlds apart from the days of the Kennedys and King and even the attempt on Reagan.

I know I would feel a whole lot better if he wasn't always being compared to Lincoln and Kennedy.  Every time he holds a rally at the capitol in Springfield, I get a shiver down my spine.  Even more locally, the neighborhood here is being called "Fort Hyde Park" because of the huge level of security around his house.  It's not the safest neighborhood in the world to begin with, so most people around here are happy to have more security services in the area, even if it means they can't find parking.  But apparently paying for it all it is starting to become an issue for taxpayers.  I hope Drew is right, and we've moved past these things.  But ...  It is something I know I worry about.
